Prince William Urged to Streamline Monarchy Ahead of Kingship
In light of ongoing scrutiny surrounding the British monarchy, a prominent expert has advised Prince William to undertake significant reforms when he ascends to the throne. The suggestion comes after a challenging year for the royal family, primarily due to the controversies involving Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the former Duke of York.
Despite some joyous occasions in 2025, such as the birth of Princess Beatrice‘s second daughter and the engagement of Peter Phillips, the royal narrative has been overshadowed by Andrew’s connections to the Jeffrey Epstein scandal. This issue has prompted increased scrutiny of his personal affairs, including the terms of his tenancy for the Royal Lodge, where it was revealed he has been paying a mere “peppercorn” rent.
The situation has led to a Commons committee launching an inquiry into the Crown Estate and other royal properties. In response to these developments, royal expert Jennie Bond emphasized the need for Prince William to consider reducing the monarchy’s extensive property portfolio. In a column for The i Paper, she remarked on the changing perceptions of monarchy, stating, “The old idea of the ‘magic of monarchy’ may no longer hold true, but many people genuinely love the pomp and pageantry.”
Bond argued that the current public sentiment warrants a re-evaluation of royal properties, suggesting that the vast number of residences, which span locations from Scotland to London, is no longer tenable. She stated, “Nobody needs so many houses, castles and palaces. And it is particularly offensive when juxtaposed with William’s campaign to end homelessness.”
As discussions about modernization gain momentum, Bond believes that Prince William’s proactive stance could enhance his effectiveness as a contemporary monarch. She urged him to consider either disposing of or repurposing many of the royal residences, indicating that such measures could redefine the monarchy for the 21st century.
Following the revelations about Andrew’s minimal rent, the Commons committee’s inquiry has also examined other royal residences, including those held by Prince William and Princess Catherine. The Public Accounts Committee has confirmed that the couple has been paying the full market rate for their property, Forest Lodge.
In a briefing with Members of Parliament, the Crown Estate detailed the findings regarding Andrew’s Royal Lodge, noting that while the necessary repairs at the property are typical for such tenancies, they suggest he will not receive any compensation for vacating it. The estate clarified, “Our initial assessment is that while the extent of end of tenancy dilapidations and repairs required are not out of keeping with a tenancy of this duration, they will mean in all likelihood that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor will not be owed any compensation for early surrender of the lease.”
Andrew, who provided the required twelve months’ notice to vacate the property on October 30, 2026, might have been due £488,342.21 ($655,640.93) for terminating his tenancy if no restoration work had been needed. As the monarchy faces increased scrutiny over its finances and public image, Prince William’s decisions in the coming years will likely play a crucial role in shaping the future of the royal family.
