The London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) has appointed John Harte as its new Managing Director, effective August 2026. Harte, who has served as the Chief Executive of Aurora Orchestra since 2009, expressed his enthusiasm for joining the LSO, a company he has long admired for its artistic vibrancy and significant social impact.

In his statement, Harte remarked, “I am thrilled to be joining the LSO, a company whose artistic vibrancy, rich history, and extraordinary social impact I’ve long admired. It’s a privilege to be appointed to the MD role at a moment of such artistic and organisational strength, and I look forward to working closely with players, staff, board and collaborators to take the Orchestra to still greater heights in the coming years.”

Sarah Quinn, Chair of the LSO, praised Harte’s track record at Aurora Orchestra, highlighting its rapid rise as a significant force in UK music. She stated, “John has led outstanding work at Aurora Orchestra, which has become a significant force in UK music in an impressively short period of time. We very much look forward to working together.”

Harte will succeed Dame Kathryn McDowell, who has led the LSO for over a decade. Under McDowell’s leadership, the orchestra has expanded its reach and influence, enhancing its reputation both in the UK and internationally.

As he transitions into his new role, Harte will join a distinguished team that includes chief conductor Sir Antonio Pappano and conductor emeritus Sir Simon Rattle. Collaborating with these renowned figures, he aims to build upon the LSO’s existing strengths and explore new artistic avenues.

The London Symphony Orchestra has a rich history, dating back to 1904, and has been instrumental in shaping the landscape of orchestral music. With Harte at the helm, the organization is poised for further growth and innovation in the coming years.

This leadership change comes at a time when the LSO is also preparing for an ambitious concert season, showcasing a blend of classic repertoire and contemporary works. The orchestra’s commitment to social impact and community engagement remains a cornerstone of its mission, which Harte plans to uphold and enhance.

As the LSO prepares for this new chapter, both Harte and Quinn expressed optimism about the future, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and artistic exploration in the orchestra’s ongoing journey.
