Community Commemorates Martin Luther King Jr. at Tri-C Celebration

On January 14, 2024, community members gathered at Playhouse Square in Cleveland to celebrate the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C) hosted its 49th annual celebration, which aimed not just to honor King’s birthday, but to reflect on the ongoing relevance of his message in today’s society.

Engaging Performances Highlight the Event

The event took place inside the KeyBank State Theatre, where students, educators, artists, and local residents came together. The celebration commenced with a powerful performance by the Tri-C Creative Arts Academy Dance Collective. The dancers expressed themes of struggle, resilience, and progress, effectively setting the tone for a gathering that would honor King through more than mere speeches.

In a unique twist, two Tri-C students were chosen through an essay contest to respond to a pivotal line from King’s 1965 commencement address at Oberlin College: “The time is always right to do what is right.” The essayists grounded their reflections in personal experiences, transcending historical context to emphasize the ongoing impact of King’s teachings.

Salma Marzouk, a College Credit Plus student and high school sophomore, shared her insights on the generational challenges posed by racism and self-doubt. She articulated how these issues continue to shape the lives of many within her community. Following her, Mona Pruitt, a registered nursing student with two decades of service at the Louis Stokes Cleveland Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, provided her perspective, rooted in a career dedicated to caring for others.

Recognizing Future Leaders and Inspiring Action

Throughout the afternoon, several students were recognized as recipients of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Scholarship Fund and the Cleveland Teachers Union Endowed Scholarship Fund. Tri-C President Michael A. Baston highlighted the importance of education as a pathway to equity and civic responsibility, echoing King’s enduring messages.

The celebration reached a jubilant peak when The Clark Sisters took the stage, transforming the venue into a gospel revival. Their performance was so engaging that audience members found themselves dancing and singing along, creating an atmosphere of unity and joy.

Wayne Dawson, a longtime anchor for Fox 8 News and a former Tri-C student, served as the event’s emcee. He concluded the program by encouraging attendees to honor King’s legacy through tangible actions in their communities.

This annual celebration serves as a reminder not only of King’s accomplishments but also of the work that remains in achieving his vision of equality and justice. As the community gathered to reflect, it became clear that King’s legacy continues to inspire and challenge individuals to strive for a better future.
