Governor Walz Appoints James Lawrence as Chair of MAC
James Lawrence has been appointed as the new chair of the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) by Governor Tim Walz. This announcement was made on Wednesday, marking a significant step in Lawrence’s extensive career in business and aviation. He takes over from former chair Rick King, who retired in November.
The MAC is responsible for overseeing the operations of the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and six other general aviation airports. Lawrence’s term as chair is set to last until January 4, 2027. He previously led the MAC’s planning and development committee and has been a commissioner since 2021, having been appointed by Walz.
In a statement, Lawrence expressed enthusiasm for his new role, stating, “I’m looking forward to working with a tremendous commission staff that operates one of the largest airport systems in the country. That includes MSP Airport, which has earned the highest honors in the industry and provides global travel and business connections that greatly benefit Minnesota.”
Lawrence’s extensive background includes a notable tenure as the chief financial officer of Northwest Airlines from 1996 to 1998 and CFO of General Mills for nine years. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Yale University and an MBA from Harvard University. His experience in the aviation sector includes serving on the boards of several airlines, including Continental Airlines and TWA.
During his time at Northwest Airlines, he was involved in significant developments and partnerships, such as negotiating a partnership alliance with KLM. This collaboration set a standard in the industry, reflecting his ability to foster strategic relationships.
As chair of MAC, one of Lawrence’s initial challenges will be addressing the implications of Allegiant Air’s plans to acquire Sun Country Airlines. The merger is expected to close in the second half of 2026, with the combined airline headquartered in Las Vegas. In 2024, Sun Country held an 11.5% passenger market share at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, second only to Delta Air Lines, which commanded 69.5% of the market.
Lawrence has also served as a board director for AerCap, the world’s largest owner of commercial aircraft. His local influence extends to his role as chair of a private investment firm based in Minneapolis, highlighting his commitment to both the aviation industry and the Twin Cities community.
Lawrence’s deep-seated connections and experience in the aviation sector position him well to lead the MAC during a transformative period in the industry. His leadership will be critical as the commission navigates challenges and opportunities in the coming years.
