Miami Honors Coach Larrañaga with Banner During Emotional Ceremony
UPDATE: The University of Miami has officially honored retired coach Jim Larrañaga with a commemorative banner that now hangs in the rafters of the Watsco Center. The emotional tribute took place on February 6, 2025, before the Hurricanes’ Atlantic Coast Conference matchup against Florida State, marking a significant moment for the university and its basketball program.
During a heartfelt pregame ceremony, the Hurricanes unveiled a banner featuring Larrañaga’s name, title, and his impressive tenure from 2011 to 2024. This gesture celebrates his remarkable contributions to Miami basketball and the legacy he leaves behind.
In the midst of the celebration, the game did not go in Miami’s favor as they fell to Florida State with a final score of 65-63. Larrañaga’s unexpected retirement in December 2024 brought an end to a glorious 14-year tenure with the Hurricanes and a distinguished 41-year career that included a total of 744 wins across various institutions.
Larrañaga led Miami to tremendous heights, including an appearance in the 2023 Final Four and multiple NCAA tournament runs, securing six tournament appearances, four Sweet 16s, two Elite Eights, and two Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season titles. His achievements at Miami were paralleled by his earlier success at George Mason, where he also reached the Final Four in 2006.
The ceremony also paid tribute to Bill Courtney, Larrañaga’s longtime assistant, who tragically passed away just last week. The evening included a moment of silence in Courtney’s honor, highlighting the deep friendships and bonds formed within the program. He had taken over the coaching duties following Larrañaga’s retirement.
Larrañaga’s impact on the Miami basketball community is immeasurable. His coaching philosophy and dedication have inspired countless players and fans alike, creating a legacy that will endure long after his departure. Miami’s tribute not only commemorates his achievements but also reinforces the strong sense of community and support within the university.
As we look to the future, Miami basketball fans are left reflecting on Larrañaga’s extraordinary career and what lies ahead for the program under new leadership. Stay tuned for more updates on the Hurricanes and their ongoing season as they navigate this significant transition.
