The New York Jets are reportedly preparing to part ways with quarterback Justin Fields following a disappointing season that saw him struggle with injuries and performance issues. After signing Fields to a $40 million contract, the Jets are likely to opt out of his deal and allow him to enter free agency this offseason.

Fields, a former first-round pick, had a challenging tenure with the Jets, recording a 2-7 record as the starting quarterback. According to sports analyst Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report, a reunion with the Pittsburgh Steelers may present Fields with his best opportunity to revive his career. Knox noted that Fields experienced more success with the Steelers two seasons ago, where he managed a 4-2 record.

Steelers Consider Options as Quarterback Search Intensifies

The Steelers are now at a crossroads themselves, especially with uncertainty surrounding the future of their quarterback position. With Aaron Rodgers potentially stepping away from the game, the Steelers may need to explore options for a veteran starter. Knox emphasized that Fields’ familiarity with the organization could work in his favor, despite the changes resulting from Mike Tomlin‘s departure as head coach.

While Fields did not emerge as a star in Pittsburgh, he showcased his ability to control games and secure victories during his previous stint. The Steelers’ interest in Fields last offseason, when they made an offer before the Jets outbid them, suggests that they still see potential in the quarterback.

In the upcoming offseason, the Steelers will not only need to address their coaching situation but also their quarterback roster. Fields could find himself in a competitive battle for the starting position against other quarterbacks, including Will Howard and Mason Rudolph, alongside potential draft picks.

As the Jets prepare to move on from Fields, the quarterback is expected to have opportunities elsewhere in the league. His time with the Jets may have been tumultuous, but there remains a chance for him to find success in a more conducive environment, especially if he returns to Pittsburgh.
