Community Mourns the Passing of Billie Jane Harris, 74
Billie Jane Harris, a beloved member of the Roanoke community, passed away on January 21, 2026, at the age of 74. Her death has left a profound impact on those who knew her, as she was admired for her kindness, faith, and dedication to her family.
Born on July 23, 1951, to William Manning Burdett and Verna Lee Hill, Billie Jane was known for her vibrant spirit. Friends and family remember her as someone who found joy in simple pleasures such as caring for her birds, tending to her flowers, and baking for loved ones. Her unwavering faith in God was a cornerstone of her life, and she was known to offer heartfelt prayers for those around her.
Legacy and Family
Billie Jane was preceded in death by her parents, as well as her sisters, Martha Lee Burdett and Melberlene Burdett Webb, and her grandson, Blake Lee Baker. She is survived by her devoted husband, James Edward Harris, and their two sons, Michael Harris and Gregory Harris. Michael resides in Cullman with his wife, Christy, while Gregory lives in Claremont, North Carolina, with his wife, Chrissy.
Billie Jane was the proud grandmother of six grandchildren: Brenton Harris of Mooresville, North Carolina; Hunter Harris of Claremont; Dalton Harris of Hickory, North Carolina; Camryn Harris Kerns of Sherrilsford, North Carolina; Austin Duncan of Cullman; and Kayla Baker of Bremen. She also cherished her three great-grandchildren: Colt Harris, Sullivan Harris, and Khloe Baker.
In addition to her immediate family, Billie Jane is survived by her brother, William Oscar Burdett, and her sisters, Evelyn Harmon and Verna Joan Henderson. Her family and friends remember her as a beacon of love and support.
Memorial Service Plans
A memorial service to honor Billie Jane Harris will be held at a later date, which will be announced in the coming weeks. The community is invited to join in celebrating her life and the positive impact she made on those around her.
