Chicago Swimmers Brave Polar Plunge to Embrace Winter Fun
As temperatures in Chicago plummeted to sub-zero levels this weekend, a daring group of swimmers took a plunge into the icy waters of Lake Michigan. Led by George “Iceberg” Miller, the group sought to challenge conventional views of winter, transforming it from a season of complaint into one of adventure.
Miller, who has embraced this winter ritual after initially disliking the cold, has been diving into the lake daily this winter. His passion began under the guidance of a yoga instructor and has since evolved into a community-building activity alongside his wife, Jesy Grose. “Everybody complains about Chicago winters. It’s so cold, yada, yada. Things close down,” Miller expressed, emphasizing his desire to make Chicago a winter destination.
On Sunday, January 14, 2024, as a winter storm warning blanketed the city with several inches of snow, Miller, Grose, and fellow swimmers Hayley Kimbrueh and Tom Ashman sprinted into the frigid waters at Oak Street Beach. With the air temperature at a biting 18 degrees Fahrenheit and a wind chill of 5 degrees, the group spent 15 minutes in the lake. “It feels really good after the first 30 seconds,” Miller said, noting the rush of endorphins and adrenaline that follows the initial shock of the cold.
Research supports the potential benefits of cold-water immersion. A review of 11 studies published in 2025 suggests that polar plunges may reduce stress and improve sleep, although a direct link to mood enhancement or increased immunity remains unconfirmed. Miller reported a significant improvement in his own mood after his first plunge four years ago. “I felt sensations with mental clarity that I think it’s safe to say that I had never experienced before, and I was hooked immediately,” he recalled.
At 43 years old, Miller works as a leadership, career, and life coach. He encourages others to confront their fears and step outside their comfort zones. “I feel afraid every single time, and that’s OK,” he stated. “I’m getting my system to be cool with being more afraid in a space that’s safe.”
Preparation is vital for those considering a winter plunge. Miller advises newcomers to gradually acclimate their bodies to the cold water to mitigate the shock. He emphasizes safety, noting that plungers should never go alone and should always inform the Chicago Police Department Marine Unit prior to entering the water. This precaution ensures that trained personnel monitor the swimmers, with cameras along the lakefront providing additional oversight.
To protect against the cold, participants wear neoprene boots and gloves, which prevent numbness and potential injuries from submerged debris. Miller’s community of winter swimmers has grown significantly; from just a few individuals when he first started, he estimates over 100 people now take the plunge into Lake Michigan each winter.
After completing their icy swim, Miller and his group typically retreat to a nearby sauna to warm up, marking the end of their invigorating winter ritual. Through this unique experience, Miller aims to inspire a shift in perspective about winter in Chicago, urging residents to embrace the season rather than retreat indoors.
