Billionaire Jeff Bezos has reportedly reached a breaking point with Will Lewis, the chief executive of The Washington Post, following a controversial public appearance just days after significant layoffs impacted the newsroom. Lewis, who was appointed by Bezos in January 2024 to rejuvenate the publication, announced his departure on Saturday, two years into his tenure. His exit comes on the heels of a viral video showing him walking the red carpet at the NFL Honors ceremony in San Francisco on February 8, one day after the Post disclosed layoffs affecting approximately 300 journalists.

Insiders within the organization expressed frustration at Lewis’s decision to attend the ceremony, considering it a “callous” act in light of the recent cuts. According to a report from the Financial Times, senior management was particularly incensed, and for Bezos, it was described as “the last straw.” Lewis’s lack of communication on the day the layoffs were announced further exacerbated tensions, as he failed to address staff concerns or issue a statement regarding the cuts.

Critics highlighted Lewis’s absence from a crucial conference call on February 7, where details about the layoffs were shared. Former and current staffers took to social media to voice their discontent, with Nicki Jhabvala, a reporter for The Athletic and former Post journalist, noting, “Will Lewis was too busy to join the call to tell his staff he’s destroying the @washingtonpost sports department yesterday… but he did have time to walk the red carpet at NFL Honors here in San Francisco today. Amazing.”

In a statement addressing Lewis’s resignation, Bezos emphasized the importance of the Post’s journalistic mission, stating, “The Post has an essential journalistic mission and an extraordinary opportunity. Each and every day our readers give us a roadmap to success.” The statement, which did not mention Lewis by name, highlighted a focus on data-driven strategies to guide the paper’s future.

Following Lewis’s resignation, Jeff D’Onofrio, the chief financial officer of the Post, has been appointed as interim chief executive. Lewis’s resignation letter, which was shared publicly, thanked Bezos for his support but notably failed to acknowledge the staff. He stated, “I want to thank Jeff Bezos for his support and leadership throughout my tenure as CEO and Publisher. The institution could not have a better owner.”

Lewis, who previously had a long career in British media, faced a challenging tenure at the Post. His time was marked by significant subscriber losses, internal conflicts, and controversies stemming from his previous roles. Under his leadership, the Post encountered substantial backlash after the removal of a presidential endorsement of Kamala Harris, leading to the resignation of key figures and ongoing disputes over coverage related to phone-hacking litigation from his past in the British press.

As Lewis departs, the future direction of The Washington Post remains uncertain, with many observers questioning the leadership strategies that will emerge under D’Onofrio’s interim guidance. The fallout from this leadership change will likely have lasting implications for the newsroom and its ability to navigate the evolving media landscape.

The Daily Beast has reached out to The Washington Post for further comments regarding this significant transition.
