Red Sox Acquire Rookie of the Year Finalist Caleb Durbin in Trade
The Boston Red Sox bolstered their infield on March 4, 2024, by acquiring infielder Caleb Durbin, a finalist for the Rookie of the Year award, from the Milwaukee Brewers in a significant six-player trade. This deal involves sending Kyle Harrison, David Hamilton, and Shane Drohan to Milwaukee. In return, the Red Sox also receive Andruw Monasterio, Anthony Seigler, and a competitive balance draft pick, which will finalize as the team opens spring training at Fenway South.
Durbin, now 25 years old, has emerged as a promising addition for the Red Sox, who have been exploring various trade options for their infield. The team previously showed interest in other candidates, including Isaac Paredes of the Houston Astros and Nico Hoerner and Matt Shaw from the Chicago Cubs. The recent acquisition comes in the wake of Alex Bregman‘s signing of a five-year deal with Chicago, prompting Boston to seek depth in their infield.
In the 2025 season, Durbin primarily played third base, logging 1,060.2 innings during his rookie year. He also displayed versatility by playing ten games at second base and three at shortstop. This flexibility will likely benefit manager Alex Cora, especially as the team prepares for training camp. With Willson Contreras now at first base and Trevor Story positioned at shortstop, the infield competition will include Durbin, Marcelo Mayer, and newly signed free agent Isiah Kiner-Falefa for roles at second and third base.
Durbin’s offensive performance in 2025 was solid, with a batting average of .256 across 136 games. He contributed 11 home runs, 25 doubles, and 53 RBIs, while achieving a .721 OPS. Additionally, he demonstrated speed on the bases, successfully stealing 18 bases in 24 attempts. Notably, Durbin recorded a low strikeout rate of 9.9% and led the National League by being hit by pitches 24 times.
As the Red Sox look to enhance their roster, the addition of a player like Durbin, known for his reliable fielding and emerging offensive capabilities, could be a critical factor in their success for the upcoming season.
