Actor Eric Dane Dies at 53 After ALS Battle, Advocated for Awareness
BREAKING: Actor Eric Dane, renowned for his iconic roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, has tragically passed away at the age of 53 after a courageous battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. His representatives confirmed the news today, stating that Dane succumbed to the disease less than a year after his diagnosis.
Dane, surrounded by his loving family—including his devoted wife and daughters Billie and Georgia—spent his final days in the company of those closest to him. “He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always,” his family expressed in a heartfelt statement, requesting privacy during this difficult time.
Throughout his battle with ALS, Dane emerged as a passionate advocate for awareness and research into the disease. He became a voice for countless others facing similar challenges, dedicating his efforts to raising awareness and support for the ALS community. In June 2025, he addressed a conference, sharing, “Some of you may know me from TV shows, such as Grey’s Anatomy, which I play a doctor. But I am here today to speak briefly as a patient battling ALS.”
Dane’s career skyrocketed in the mid-2000s when he was cast as the charismatic Dr. Mark Sloan, affectionately known as “McSteamy,” on the ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. He played this role from 2006 until 2012 and reprised it in 2021. In 2019, he shifted gears to portray Cal Jacobs in HBO’s Euphoria, showcasing his versatility as an actor.
In recognition of his advocacy, the ALS Network honored Dane with their Advocate of the Year award in September 2025, acknowledging his commitment to improving the lives of those affected by the disease. He once stated, “If sharing this helps someone find meaning in their own days, then my story is worth telling,” reflecting his desire to inspire others even in the face of adversity.
Dane’s death on February 19, 2025, marks a significant loss for both his family and the entertainment industry. Fans and colleagues alike are mourning his passing, with tributes pouring in across social media platforms. Many remember him not only for his talent but also for his generous spirit and dedication to making a difference.
