Zelensky Vows to Continue Fight as War Anniversary Approaches
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reaffirmed his commitment to resist Russian aggression on the anniversary of the war, declaring that Ukraine will not betray the sacrifices made by its people over the past four years. Zelensky’s remarks came on February 24, 2024, as Ukraine commemorated the full-scale invasion by Russia, which began two years earlier. His statements highlighted the ongoing struggle faced by the nation as it navigates complex international relations.
As the anniversary approached, tensions among Ukraine’s European allies became evident. European nations had aimed to finalize a new package of sanctions against Russia and secure a €90 billion loan for Ukraine. However, Hungary, maintaining close ties with Moscow, continued to exert its veto power, complicating efforts for a unified response. Hungary and neighboring Slovakia have accused Kyiv of obstructing Russian oil supplies via the Druzhba pipeline, a claim that Ukraine disputes, asserting it is working to repair damage inflicted by a Russian strike.
Commemorative Events in Kyiv
Zelensky was set to welcome dignitaries from Western Europe, including Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, for ceremonies in Kyiv. In contrast to previous years, no major Western leaders were scheduled to attend this year’s commemorations. During his morning address, Zelensky emphasized the resilience of the Ukrainian people, stating, “Putin has not achieved his goals. He has not broken the Ukrainian people. He has not won this war.” He extended an invitation to Donald Trump, urging him to visit Ukraine to understand the realities of the conflict.
The war has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives, with both Ukrainian soldiers and civilians suffering heavy casualties. Russian military actions have devastated Ukrainian cities, leading to significant loss of life and infrastructure. Ongoing peace negotiations, facilitated by the United States, have stalled over territorial disputes. Russia demands that Ukraine concede the remaining 20% of the eastern region of Donetsk, while Kyiv remains firm in its stance not to relinquish territory that has seen immense sacrifice.
Calls for a Strong Peace
Zelensky reiterated the desire for a “strong, dignified, lasting peace,” urging peace negotiators to respect the sacrifices made by Ukraine over the years. He stated, “Do not nullify all these years, do not devalue all the struggle, courage, dignity, everything that Ukraine has gone through. We cannot, we must not, give it away, forget it, betray it.”
International leaders have voiced their support for Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron remarked on social media platform X that Russia has incurred significant costs for minimal territorial gains. He stated, “One day, Russians will grasp the enormity of the crime committed in their name.” Polish President Karol Nawrocki also expressed solidarity, emphasizing that Russia’s actions pose a serious threat to the security of Europe, while praising the courage of those defending freedom daily.
As Ukraine honors the memory of those lost in the conflict, the nation remains steadfast in its resolve, bolstered by international allies who continue to advocate for its sovereignty and security.
