Bo Horvat’s Overtime Goal Sinks Sharks in Thrilling Finish
In a thrilling conclusion to their homestand, the New York Islanders defeated the San Jose Sharks 2-1 in overtime on March 16, 2024. Bo Horvat scored the decisive goal just 4:20 into the extra period, showcasing his skill and speed as he eluded Sharks defenseman Sam Dickinson before beating goalie Yaroslav Askarov for his 37th goal of the season.
With this overtime loss, the Sharks concluded their six-game homestand with a record of 3-1-2. They now prepare for a challenging five-game road trip, beginning Tuesday against the Buffalo Sabres. Entering Saturday’s game, the Sharks were just two points behind the Seattle Kraken for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference.
Key Performances and Game Highlights
Macklin Celebrini, a standout player for the Sharks, scored his fourth goal in five games during the match. Askarov had a strong performance, stopping 32 of 34 shots, continuing from his impressive outing earlier in the week against the Montreal Canadiens, where he recorded 31 saves in a high-scoring 7-5 victory.
The game began with the Sharks struggling to maintain puck management, a lingering issue from their previous 3-2 overtime loss to the St. Louis Blues. Despite this, they played a solid first period against the Islanders, though they found themselves trailing 1-0 after a goal from Tony DeAngelo. Calum Ritchie initiated the play, setting up DeAngelo for a wrist shot that left Askarov unable to make the save.
However, the Sharks quickly responded. Just 33 seconds into the second period, John Klingberg found Will Smith near the goal line. Smith then passed to Celebrini, who capitalized on the opportunity, netting his 32nd goal of the season. Celebrini has been a key player for the Sharks, racking up 88 points this season with three goals and four assists during the homestand.
Draft Connections and Player Insights
Saturday’s game was particularly notable for showcasing two of the top draft picks in recent years. Celebrini, the first overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, faced off against Matthew Schaefer, the top selection from the previous draft. Schaefer has made an impact with the Islanders, contributing 20 goals and 45 points in 63 games, while averaging 24:11 in ice time per game.
Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky praised Schaefer’s exceptional abilities, stating, “Elusive, dynamic, gets up the ice, plays with swagger. He’s obviously going to be a very special defenseman for a long time.” The Sharks had the best odds in the draft lottery last year but lost the opportunity to select Schaefer to the Islanders, who had a mere 3.5% chance of winning the pick.
In a lineup decision, Philipp Kurashev, who had recorded assists in three of the last four games, was a healthy scratch for this match. Warsofsky opted to insert Ryan Reaves into the lineup, aiming to bring fresh energy to the team during this back-to-back situation. Kurashev had been impactful, assisting on key plays, but the coaching staff felt a change was necessary for this matchup.
Despite the loss, the Sharks displayed resilience throughout the game. Sherwood, who benefited from Kurashev’s setup in earlier matches, expressed confidence in his teammate, noting, “He’s a hell of a player. There’s a reason he was in the Olympics, right? He’s got some great poise.”
As the Sharks look forward to their upcoming road trip, they will aim to address the issues that led to their recent defeats. With a mix of young talent and strategic adjustments, the team hopes to regain momentum and secure a playoff position as the season progresses.
