Embark Studios, the developer behind the upcoming title Arc Raiders, faced a significant decision regarding its launch amid fierce competition from major gaming franchises. Following a shift to a $40 premium pricing model, inspired by Helldivers 2, Studio CEO Patrick Söderlund revealed that concerns about the timing of their release were heavily influenced by the anticipated launch of GTA 6 from Rockstar Games.

In an interview with GamesBeat, Söderlund emphasized that discussions about the game’s release date were dominated by the looming presence of GTA 6. “The first dialog we had was obviously centered around GTA,” he noted. “We did not want to be close to them. I don’t think anyone wanted to be close to them.” This sentiment reflects the competitive nature of the gaming industry, particularly when it comes to major titles that can overshadow others.

The release of GTA 6 was previously delayed to November 2026, which allowed Embark to finalize a launch date for Arc Raiders. The developers anticipated that Battlefield would also be releasing around the same time, along with the latest installment of Call of Duty, which historically launches in the same timeframe each year. Söderlund explained, “We had a pretty reasonable hunch that Battlefield was coming around the time frame, we knew that Call of Duty was going to ship roughly when it did.”

Despite these challenges, Arc Raiders launched successfully, securing the title of the top-selling game on Steam during the holiday season. Söderlund acknowledged that the strategic decision to launch the game between these two established franchises may have played to their advantage. “As we started to see more of Battlefield 6, we thought that looked good; we didn’t see much of Call of Duty,” he added.

The choice of a $40 price point also contributed to the game’s appeal. Söderlund noted, “We believed that we could get to a place where we could be competitive in a different way. We felt that the game was offering something very different from what those other games were.” This uniqueness, combined with strong performance indicators from prior technical tests, gave the team confidence in their launch decision.

The developers conducted a final test, dubbed the “Server Slam,” shortly before the official release. This event provided valuable data that further solidified their readiness to launch. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with Arc Raiders reportedly selling 12 million copies and setting a new record for active players just two months after its release.

The journey for Arc Raiders illustrates the intense competition and strategic planning necessary in the gaming industry. With its successful launch, Embark Studios has not only made a mark but has also demonstrated the potential for new titles to thrive alongside established giants.
