Mojo Birds Unveils Self-Titled Album at Animas City Theatre

Local band Mojo Birds will celebrate the release of their self-titled album with a live performance on March 15, 2024, at the Animas City Theatre in Durango, Colorado. The event will kick off at 18:00 (doors open) and feature special guests including Dana Ariel and Ely Cartwright, along with a horn section comprising Damien Hagge on saxophone, Casey Padron on trombone, and Jared Wright on trumpet.

The time from recording to releasing an album can span several months, during which the songs often evolve, especially in a live setting. Guitarist and vocalist Jay Harootunian expressed excitement about this growth, noting, “The songs will evolve a little bit, and we found that out during a rehearsal the other night.” He emphasized that collaboration with horn players brought new dimensions to their music, highlighting the dynamic nature of live performances compared to studio recordings.

The new album, recorded last year in Nashville at the studio of The Wood Brothers, represents a significant milestone for the band. This experience not only strengthened their musical connections but also allowed them to immerse themselves in a vibrant music community. Harootunian remarked on the positive energy generated during the recording process, stating, “Jano Rix from The Wood Brothers is the one that helped us produce it. He really affects the energy in the room.”

While Durango is home to top-notch recording facilities, the opportunity to record away from their familiar environment provided a fresh perspective for the band. Harootunian noted, “Getting out of town and recording certainly changes the mindset. To get to go travel with the band, being in a new place, you just get the energy.”

The sound of Mojo Birds is characterized by a blend of festival rock and roots-heavy funk and soul. The band’s live performances are known for their high energy and festive atmosphere. “The second you get on stage, you start kind of floating a bit. You get this really magical feeling,” Harootunian said. He emphasized that performing feels less like a job and more like a shared experience with the audience, as they strive to create music that resonates with both themselves and their listeners.

In addition to their album release, Mojo Birds has printed a limited run of 500 vinyl records, each featuring unique linocut cover art designed by the band. Drummer Ted Moore expressed enthusiasm about this artistic aspect of their release, calling it “super cool.”

As the band gears up for their performance, excitement is palpable among the members. They are eager to share their new work with fans and showcase how their songs have evolved since their studio days.
