Director Patrick Hughes Shares Insights on Thrilling Action Sequences

The new Netflix film War Machine, directed by Patrick Hughes, pays homage to classic action and science fiction films. Released on the streaming platform, it draws inspiration from beloved titles such as Predator, Aliens, and War of the Worlds. Hughes, who also co-wrote the screenplay, aims to create an immersive viewing experience by incorporating practical effects and dynamic stunts reminiscent of 1980s cinema.

Hughes emphasizes the importance of crafting realistic action sequences that resonate emotionally with audiences. The film features a standout moment where characters, including Army Ranger applicant “81,” portrayed by Alan Ritchson, face an extraterrestrial threat during a combat simulation. This scene captures the tension of a missile strike, resulting in a dramatic tumble down a cliff, setting the tone for the film’s adrenaline-fueled narrative.

“I wanted to set the tone with shot one,” Hughes remarked in an interview with Polygon. “We called ‘Action!’ and at the same time, they let me press the button that would explode 12 actors off a cliff.” This high-risk sequence showcases the dedication of the stunt team, who executed complex maneuvers to enhance the film’s authenticity.

Ritchson noted that the physical demands of the stunts were intense. “My stunt double Ryan Tarran took some serious hits,” he explained. “There were no other flesh tones at all; his entire right side was purple from the impacts.” Such dedication underscores the commitment of the cast and crew to deliver a visceral action experience.

Hughes believes that practical effects elevate the film’s impact, making it easier for viewers to connect with the on-screen chaos. “We’re looking for opportunities to make the impact as visceral as possible,” he stated. This philosophy is evident in a particularly elaborate chase sequence, where Ritchson’s character and his team navigate a high-stakes pursuit against the alien invader.

The director structured this chase into three acts, allowing moments of hope before the action takes a sudden turn. “If you look at the best action sequences, they really have a rhythm,” he explained. This careful orchestration enhances the viewing experience, keeping audiences engaged and surprised.

The use of “false victories” is a key element in Hughes’ approach to action sequences. “You think the heroes have won, and then you completely reverse that,” he said, highlighting the emotional rollercoaster that action films can provide. The film’s vehicle, dubbed The Guardian, adds to the intensity of the chase, with actors experiencing the physicality of the stunts through detailed set design.

The production team employed various techniques to create a realistic environment. They built a movable gimbal for the vehicle interiors to simulate the chaos of combat. “There were a lot of sharp edges,” Ritchson remarked, reflecting on the challenges of filming in such confined spaces.

While Ritchson allowed his stunt double to handle some of the more dangerous stunts, he actively participated in many others. “I don’t really have a line for what I will or won’t do,” he stated. “99% of this, I did.” This commitment to authenticity contributes to the film’s emotional weight, enhancing the connection between the audience and the characters on screen.
