Police Investigate Possible Ransom in Disappearance of Nancy Guthrie
Authorities are investigating the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of television host Savannah Guthrie. Nancy was reportedly abducted from her home in Tucson, Arizona, and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department is now examining the possibility of a ransom note linked to the case. The investigation has intensified since Nancy was last seen on the evening of January 31, 2024, when family members noted her absence the following morning.
On February 3, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department addressed the community via a post on social media, acknowledging circulating reports about a ransom note and urging anyone with information to come forward. The statement read, “We are taking all tips and leads very seriously,” adding that all information is being directed to detectives working closely with the FBI. Earlier reports indicated that TMZ had received an unverified ransom note demanding millions in Bitcoin, which the outlet shared with law enforcement.
Family members reported Nancy missing at noon on February 1, after a friend expressed concern when she did not attend a church service that morning. Following a search of her property by her children, they contacted police. Sheriff Chris Nanos disclosed that DNA evidence was collected from Nancy’s home, which has since been classified as a crime scene. He stated, “We took some samples that we hope will have enough of a DNA profile,” aiming to identify potential suspects.
Sheriff Nanos further elaborated on the circumstances surrounding Nancy’s disappearance, stating that investigators believe she was likely taken against her will, considering her limited mobility. “We know she didn’t just walk out of there,” he confirmed, highlighting that her physical health would have made it challenging for her to leave on her own. Nanos also noted that Nancy is mentally alert, saying, “This is not dementia-related.”
As the search continues, the sheriff emphasized the urgency of the situation, revealing that Nancy requires daily medication for her health. “This is an 84-year-old lady who suffers from some physical ailments,” he said. “If she doesn’t have her medication in 24 hours, it could be fatal.”
Strong community support has emerged, with Savannah publicly appealing for prayers and assistance in locating her mother. On February 2, she posted on social media, thanking followers for their thoughts and prayers. “We need you,” she wrote. “Bring her home.” Savannah has taken a step back from her hosting duties, including withdrawing from hosting the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics, to focus on her family during this distressing time.
In a show of solidarity, Savannah’s co-hosts from the Today show expressed their support during the ongoing crisis. Jenna Bush Hager and Sheinelle Jones both shared messages of hope and encouraged viewers to provide any tips to law enforcement. Meanwhile, Willie Geist urged the public to be vigilant and report any information regarding Nancy’s whereabouts.
As the police investigation unfolds, Pima County authorities remain in contact with Savannah regarding her safety. Sheriff Nanos confirmed that Savannah has a security team in place and noted that there is currently no indication that the public is in danger. “I don’t think there’s an active threat,” he said, while acknowledging the ongoing challenges the investigation presents.
The situation remains critical as the authorities continue to seek answers in Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, appealing to the community’s collective efforts to bring her home safely.
