SUNY Ulster Hosts Exhibit Celebrating Sojourner Truth’s Legacy
SUNY Ulster will showcase an exhibit titled “Sojourner Truth: Breaking Barriers and Building Futures” to highlight the significant contributions of Sojourner Truth in the pursuit of justice. This exhibit, marking the celebration of Women’s History Month, will run from March 9 to March 13, 2024, at the Muroff-Kotler Visual Arts Gallery in Stone Ridge, New York.
Exhibit Details and Opening Reception
The opening reception is scheduled for Monday, March 9, from 12:30 to 14:00, and is free to the public. Attendees can expect remarks from Alison Buckley, Ed.D., President of SUNY Ulster, and Candice Van Dyke, Chief Diversity Officer and Professor of English. The keynote address will be delivered by Esi Lewis, Executive Director of the Dr. Margaret Wade-Lewis Center for History and Culture in New Paltz.
A panel discussion will follow, featuring Dr. Hans Vought, Professor of History and Chair of the Social Sciences, Education and History Department, alongside Dr. Nichola Harris, Professor of European History. These discussions aim to deepen the understanding of Truth’s enduring impact on social justice movements.
Historical Context and Significance
The exhibit will feature historical banners showcasing Sojourner Truth’s life and her vital role in advocating for civil rights and women’s rights. These banners are on loan from the exhibit “Sojourner Truth: A New Yorker’s Path from Slavery to Freedom,” supported by the Unified Court System, according to a recent announcement from the college.
Sojourner Truth, born into slavery in New York in 1797, became a prominent abolitionist and feminist, known for her powerful speeches and activism. Her legacy continues to inspire discussions around equality and justice, making this exhibit a timely and relevant contribution to ongoing dialogues about social change.
By hosting this exhibit, SUNY Ulster not only commemorates the historical significance of Sojourner Truth but also encourages community engagement and reflection on the progress still needed in achieving equality for all. The event promises to be an enlightening experience for attendees, allowing them to connect with Truth’s powerful message and its relevance today.
