Bijou Phillips Battles Health Crisis for Her Daughter’s Future
Bijou Phillips is currently facing a critical health crisis while striving to ensure a better future for her 12-year-old daughter, Fianna. In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, the actress revealed the immense challenges she is navigating, a journey deeply intertwined with her family’s legacy and personal struggles.
Health Challenges and Urgency for a Kidney Transplant
At the age of 45, Phillips has lived with underdeveloped kidneys since birth, requiring her to undergo dialysis for the first three months of her life. Recently, she disclosed that she is again on dialysis, following a hospitalization in February 2023. “Finding a new donor was a matter of life and death,” she stated, emphasizing the urgency of her situation.
Phillips has a personal history of kidney issues; she needed a transplant at 36. Despite her brother’s willingness to donate, he was not a match. She indicated that he may attempt to enter the kidney exchange program, which could potentially expedite her chances of receiving a compatible kidney. “If he gives his kidney, it would put me higher on the list,” she explained.
The actress expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support she has received, with 1,300 individuals offering to get tested as potential donors. “Out of those, I think we have like 50 or 60 that could possibly be a match,” she noted, highlighting the critical need for increased awareness around organ donation.
Support System and Advocacy
Phillips has a robust support network, including her sisters, actress Mackenzie Phillips and singer Chynna Phillips, her boyfriend, businessman Jamie Mazur, and close friends like Nicky Hilton and Paris Hilton. They have taken on advocacy roles during her health struggles, communicating with her medical team and providing emotional support. “To put my health out there publicly was terrifying, but my friends and family got fed up with me. They took control and were like, ‘We’re doing this,’” she said.
Despite the challenges, Phillips maintains a positive outlook. During the interview, she wore a smile, radiating calmness even while managing the physical limitations imposed by her condition. “I feel pretty good since I started dialysis,” she affirmed, acknowledging the difficulties but also recognizing the beauty in her situation.
Phillips has faced significant obstacles in navigating the healthcare system. She shared her experience with SAG (Screen Actors Guild) denying coverage for her first transplant and the subsequent bureaucratic battles she encountered. “The system is incredibly complicated, opaque and stacked in ways that make it hard even for people with resources,” she remarked, emphasizing the need for comprehensive healthcare reform.
The actress’s experience underscores the importance of raising awareness about kidney disease and organ donation. “There are 90,000 people in America that need a kidney. It’s something people don’t really understand or talk about,” she stated, advocating for more open discussions about the impact of kidney disease on lives.
Phillips’s journey has also led to deeper reflections on life and spirituality. “I’ve found a deep need for spirituality that I didn’t have when I was younger,” she explained, detailing how she has embraced prayer and community support during this challenging time.
As she balances her health struggles with parenting, Phillips remains committed to her daughter. “I want to be here for her, and I have to be here for her. The fight is back,” she affirmed. Her daughter, Fianna, is described as a “brilliant” child and a talented piano player and songwriter, which brings Phillips immense pride.
In sharing her story, Bijou Phillips aims not only to seek help for herself but also to inspire others facing similar battles. “We’re so lucky to be here on this planet, in these bodies, getting to live this life,” she said, highlighting the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
Through her advocacy and openness, Phillips hopes to shed light on the complexities of living with chronic illness while nurturing the next generation.
