Boston College Swim Team Raises Funds for Cancer Research
The Boston College swimming and diving team made a significant impact in the fight against cancer on March 30, 2024. Participating in the Swim Across America initiative, the team engaged in a pool swim event designed to raise funds and awareness for cancer research, prevention, and treatment. This national initiative hosts swimming-related events across the United States, allowing athletes and community members to contribute to a vital cause.
During the event, participants engaged in one-mile relay swims or individual competitions, showcasing their swimming skills while supporting cancer research. Junior team member Aiden Bucaria emphasized the personal connection many have to cancer, stating, “Everyone’s lives have been impacted by cancer one way or another. I swim every day, so why not swim for a good cause? I am passionate about it. We raise money, and it’s all through swimming.”
Local Impact and Community Support
The inaugural swim event at Boston College aims to generate essential funds for cancer research within the local area. According to Jack Salerno, a board member of Swim Across America, “The money we raise locally stays local. The funds we generate in Boston benefit the Dana Farber Pediatric Survivor Center, and they support brain cancer research at Mass General.”
Members of the swimming and diving team expressed enthusiasm about their involvement. Sophomore Chloe Otten remarked, “I might as well swim for a good cause if I am going to be swimming.” This sentiment reflects the team’s collective commitment to utilizing their talents for a purpose greater than themselves.
Head coach Dara Torres supported the initiative, noting the importance of combining fun with philanthropy. “Why not do something fun or something that you are great at or something you can relate to help raise money instead of knocking on doors, raising money? I think it’s brilliant to do,” she stated.
The event not only allows athletes to compete but also fosters a spirit of community involvement and awareness surrounding cancer research. Those interested in supporting the cause can make donations to further assist the ongoing efforts in cancer treatment and research.
