Cancer Survivor Urges Blood Donations During National Blood Donor Month
A woman from Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania, is rallying support for blood donations as she navigates her journey with cancer. Since being diagnosed with multiple myeloma in August 2024, Rose, who previously worked as a paraprofessional at Borland Manor Elementary School, has undergone extensive treatment, including chemotherapy, a stem cell transplant, and over 40 blood and platelet transfusions.
Rose’s health crisis began when a student jumped on her back, causing severe pain that prompted a visit to the emergency room. The diagnosis of multiple myeloma, a cancer affecting the bone marrow, was a turning point in her life. As she shared, “I was needing transfusions every week.” This experience has fueled her commitment to encouraging others to donate blood.
The timing of Rose’s advocacy coincides with National Blood Donor Month, observed in January. During this period, individuals who donate blood, platelets, or plasma between January 5 and February 8 can enter to win one of 26 gift cards valued at $500 for Vitalant’s donor rewards store.
Maya Santana, communications manager for Vitalant, commended Rose’s willingness to share her story, noting that “stories like Rose help personify the act of blood donations.” Rose had previously donated blood but had not realized the critical role donations play for patients like herself. Reflecting on her past perspective, she stated, “You think of the obvious. Surgeries that didn’t go well, emergency situations. Never did I think about cancer patients.”
For those hesitant about donating, Rose encourages them to overcome their fears. She reassures potential donors that the process is quick, taking approximately seven minutes from start to finish. “You are saving a life, which is such a blessing,” she emphasized.
Individuals interested in making a difference through blood donation can sign up for a drive by visiting donors.vitalant.org. With every donation, lives can be transformed, and Rose’s story exemplifies the profound impact one act can have during challenging times.
