James Earl Powers, Beloved Journalist and Pickleball Enthusiast, Dies at 68

James Earl Powers, a dedicated journalist and enthusiastic pickleball player, passed away peacefully at home on December 9, 2025, after a courageous three-year battle with cancer. He was 68 years old. Powers is remembered for his passion for sports, his engaging writing, and his warm spirit.

Born on July 11, 1957, in Illinois, Jim was raised in Wilmette, where he developed a lifelong affection for the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs. His love for Chicago sports inspired his career in journalism, beginning with the Des Plaines Journal shortly after graduating from Illinois State University in 1979. He later earned a Master’s in Education from Grand Canyon University in 2002.

Throughout his career, Jim contributed to various publications, including U-Haul International, Ahwatukee Foothills News, Sun-Times Media Group, and Patch.com, before concluding his career at Palm Springs Life. He was deeply saddened to miss his 50th high school reunion at New Trier East High School in 2025 due to his health challenges.

His passion extended beyond writing; Jim became a well-known figure in the local pickleball community. He organized leagues and tournaments, introducing many to the sport, which he cherished alongside his fascination with all things related to Star Wars.

In November 2022, Jim retired from Palm Springs Life but soon took a part-time position at the local Acrisure Arena, where he enjoyed watching the Coachella Valley Firebirds and various musical performances. He also had the opportunity to travel, including a memorable trip to Costa Rica.

Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Virginia and Warren Powers, and his beloved dog, Zoe, who passed away in December 2021 after 15 years together. He is survived by his partner of 11 years, Harry Davis, as well as siblings Judy Peelo, William “Bill” Powers, Janis Benzuly, and Chris Powers, along with their families.
