Despite these promising results, the research indicates that the stress-reducing effects of gum chewing are not universally applicable. For instance, individuals facing high-stress situations, such as before surgery or while tackling unsolvable problems, did not experience the same benefits.

While the benefits of gum chewing include enhanced focus and stress relief, they are often short-lived. Participants who chewed gum did not exhibit improved memory recall compared to those who abstained, and the attention-boosting effects diminished shortly after chewing ceased. Researchers speculate that the physical act of chewing may fulfill a natural human tendency to fidget, contributing to the perceived benefits.

The authors of the review called for further studies to explore the long-term impacts of chewing gum and to distinguish between the roles of flavor and stress. They also highlighted the need to investigate potential therapeutic applications of gum chewing.

It is essential to consider the potential downsides of this habit. Dentists have raised concerns about the effects of acids and sweeteners in gum, which can harm dental health, even in sugar-free varieties.
