Tim Allen Opens Up About Skin Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment

Tim Allen revealed in a recent podcast that he was diagnosed with skin cancer, a condition that was overlooked by medical professionals on five previous occasions. During an episode of the “Club Random” podcast with Bill Maher, which aired on January 5, 2024, the 72-year-old actor discussed how a makeup artist from The Today Show first spotted an issue on his nose during a visit two years prior.

“The lady at The Today Show noticed it,” Allen recalled, explaining that he had previously appeared on both Jimmy Fallon’s and The Today Show without addressing the concern. After some time, he decided to consult a dermatologist, asking, “Hey, doc, would you take a look at this thing on my nose?” This prompted a significant moment when the doctor, who had been seeing Allen for 30 years, finally examined the spot more closely.

According to Allen, the doctor’s reaction was alarming. “Oh s***. S***, Janice, get Paul in here, and my lawyer,” the doctor reportedly exclaimed upon discovering the cancerous growth. Allen recounted that the doctor admitted to making a serious mistake in his initial assessments.

Following the diagnosis, which included melanoma or carcinoma, Allen underwent surgery to remove the affected tissue. The comedian humorously expressed his concerns about the procedure, saying, “He goes, ‘I’m going to have to cut most of your nose off.’ He said it like that. And I go, ‘Let me explain what I do for a living… you have to leave some of my f***ing nose on so I can do comedy.’”

Allen has had a successful career in Hollywood, gaining fame as Tim “The Toolman” Taylor on the ABC sitcom “Home Improvement,” which earned him a Golden Globe Award. He also portrayed Mike Baxter on “Last Man Standing” and voiced Buzz Lightyear in the “Toy Story” franchise. His latest project, “Shifting Gears,” premiered last year on ABC and has left fans wondering if it will mark the end of his career in television.

Reflecting on the end of “Last Man Standing,” Allen shared his thoughts with Us Weekly in 2022. He noted, “I don’t want to be a Brady about it… I was just watching sports. I love sports and they all left at the top of their game and that was an interesting thing.”

Despite expressing a love for his work, Allen hinted at the possibility of stepping back. “This probably will be the end of it,” he told USA Today in February 2025, acknowledging that while he enjoys being on set, the thought of stepping away from it is daunting.
