Health Officials Offer Clarity on Allergies vs. Viral Symptoms

As pollen from Cedar trees fills the air and influenza cases rise, health officials in Austin are providing guidance to help the public differentiate between allergy symptoms and those of viral infections. The Austin-Travis County Health Authority has emphasized the importance of recognizing the differences, particularly as this season sees an increase in respiratory illnesses.

Dr. Desmar Walkes of the Austin-Travis County Health Authority noted that the overlap in symptoms can often lead to confusion. “Post-holiday gatherings are when we see many people experiencing symptoms, including runny noses and coughs, which could come from allergens, the flu, COVID-19, or RSV,” she stated. With families gathering in shared spaces, it is crucial for individuals to remain vigilant and informed.

In light of rising cases, health officials have urged residents to take precautions. “If you’re feeling sick, stay home, wear a mask if you’re out of the house, wash your hands often, and speak with a doctor if the symptoms worsen,” Dr. Walkes advised. This proactive approach is especially vital given the increase in clinic visits for influenza-like illnesses, a trend that reflects a broader situation seen across Texas and the nation.

Fever is identified as a key distinguishing symptom of respiratory viruses, differentiating them from allergies. While antihistamines can alleviate allergy symptoms, individuals suffering from RSV will not find similar relief. For those uncertain about their symptoms, consulting a healthcare provider is recommended. These professionals can accurately diagnose the cause and suggest appropriate treatments.

Vaccination remains a critical line of defense against these illnesses. The Austin Public Health department offers vaccines through its Shots for Tots and Big Shots clinics, which include immunizations for COVID-19, flu, and RSV. This initiative provides an accessible way for the community to protect themselves as seasonal symptoms surge.

Individuals are reminded that the road to recovery and effective prevention begins with responsible actions. By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, the community can better navigate this seasonal challenge while safeguarding public health.
