Brooklyn Borough Hall Delivers 60,000 Pounds of Thanksgiving Food

Brooklyn Borough Hall organized a significant food distribution event on November 21, 2023, in response to rising food insecurity among local families. Borough President Antonio Reynoso and his team distributed over 60,000 pounds of food to assist those in need as the holiday season approaches. This initiative reflects a growing concern over food affordability and recent reductions in SNAP benefits amid a federal government shutdown.

At the event, families received a variety of essential items, including turkeys, fresh produce such as sweet potatoes, corn, apples, and onions, as well as nonperishable goods like pasta and rice. More than 125 organizations, including community kitchens, houses of worship, and nonprofit groups, benefitted from this distribution. These organizations play a vital role in addressing food insecurity and homelessness throughout Brooklyn.

The collaboration with various partners contributed significantly to the success of the event. Reynoso highlighted the support from organizations such as UA3, National Grid, Optimum, Ponce Bank, Citizens, Met Council, Macerich, Food Bazaar, and the Hispanic Federation, stating that they collectively raised more funds than in previous years.

Reynoso stressed the urgency of the situation, saying, “The distribution event just comes at a time when food insecurity is high. The national government is being very clear about wanting to cut SNAP benefits.” He assured the community, “We’re ready, we’ll keep doing this type of work. We need to do it every week to make sure that people are fed.”

Volunteers from various organizations, including staff from Borough Hall, worked efficiently to pack and distribute the food. With a well-organized assembly line in Borough Hall Plaza, they loaded vehicles with holiday staples, ensuring that families could receive their share quickly and effectively.

Joyce French, president of the Community Education Council 19, conveyed the importance of such events, stating, “We definitely need to have the events, because a lot of our families are not wealthy.” She noted that economic challenges have intensified, making the food distribution a crucial support for struggling families.

Among the volunteers were players from the New York Liberty, including guards Natasha Cloud and Rebekah Gardner. Cloud shared her perspective on the event, emphasizing the need for community support, especially during challenging times. “I always appreciate when a full family can get together and just truly be present in the moment of what they are thankful for,” she said, highlighting the importance of gratitude amidst societal chaos.

Gardner expressed her fondness for Thanksgiving, noting its significance as a day dedicated to gratitude and community. “It’s awesome that there’s a day to recognize it, where you get to spend time with your family and do things like [volunteering],” she said, encouraging more communities to host similar events.

Volunteers from the group “Save The Next Generation” also participated, demonstrating a commitment to giving back. Member Mel Quan remarked, “I like to do for others. I just like to be a better version of myself every day.” This sentiment resonated throughout the day as many volunteers dedicated their time to support their neighbors.

As the event unfolded, newlyweds Patrick and Kelly paused their wedding photo session to lend a hand, highlighting the community spirit that characterized the day. “It’s tough times right now, so this is definitely great,” Patrick noted.

The Thanksgiving food distribution at Brooklyn Borough Hall not only provided essential supplies to those in need but also reinforced the community’s commitment to supporting one another during difficult times.
