Canutillo ISD Breaks Ground on $73.9 Million Elementary School
Canutillo Independent School District (ISD) initiated construction for the new Deanna Davenport Elementary School during a groundbreaking ceremony held on March 30, 2024. This event, which took place in the Enchanted Hills subdivision, marks the beginning of a significant investment totaling $73.9 million as part of the Canutillo Bond 2024 program. The new school aims to serve as a pivotal resource for the growing community in Northwest El Paso.
Interim Superintendent Dr. Jesica Arellano addressed attendees, including district leaders, community partners, and families, emphasizing the importance of the project. “This is a proud and emotional day for us,” she stated, highlighting that the groundbreaking symbolizes “unity, growth, and our shared future.” The new facility will replace the existing campus that has served the Westway neighborhood for many years, integrating its legacy with the dynamic character of Enchanted Hills.
The proposed campus is projected to span 119,000 square feet and will include 36 classrooms, collaborative learning spaces, and facilities for physical education and extracurricular activities. Guadalupe Montañez, the principal of Davenport Elementary, expressed optimism about the new site, stating, “The new Deanna Davenport Elementary will give our students and teachers the tools and spaces they need to continue excelling.”
Construction is expected to be completed by 2027, ensuring that the school’s resources will meet the increasing demands of the local population. The endeavor reflects a district-wide commitment to enhancing educational facilities to accommodate the area’s growth.
The groundbreaking ceremony also coincided with a community event titled “Day Out for School Safety.” During this gathering, local law enforcement provided families with safety resources while children enjoyed early trick-or-treating activities. Dr. Arellano remarked on the significance of such events, stating, “Events like these strengthen the bond between our schools and our community,” and expressed gratitude for the law enforcement’s role in promoting community welfare.
Christian Lopez, President of the Enchanted Hills Neighborhood Association, echoed the community’s support for the new school. He underscored the project as not only a source of pride but also an opportunity that would benefit local families. The collaboration between the district and the community showcases the shared commitment to fostering a supportive educational environment in Northwest El Paso.
