Community Leader Weta Mathies Passes Away at 92 in California

Weta Mathies, known for her extensive community service and deep connections, passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 9, 2025, in Newport Beach, California. She was 92 years old. Born on June 20, 1933, in Pasadena, California, to Betty and Lloyd Austin, Weta led a life filled with adventure, love, and a commitment to helping others.

Growing up in Arcadia, Weta developed a passion for animals, particularly as an avid horsewoman. Her academic journey began at Colorado College, where she met her future husband, Allen Wray Mathies Jr., a teaching assistant in Zoology. The couple married on August 23, 1956, at All Saint’s Episcopal Church in Pasadena. Their shared commitment to community service became a defining aspect of their lives together.

Weta embraced her parents’ philosophy of giving back, which guided her through decades of active public service. She held leadership positions in several organizations, including the Las Hermanitas Guild of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, where she served as President. Additionally, she contributed to the Pasadena Junior Philharmonic Committee, the USC School of Medicine Medical Faculty Wives, Pacific Clinics, the Pasadena Humane Society, and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Throughout her involvement, Weta often took on roles such as Board Chair and continued to serve in an Emeritus capacity until recent years. When Allen became Dean of the USC School of Medicine, Weta was instrumental in founding and later presiding over CARES, the Auxiliary of LA County/USC Medical Center. Each year, she and Allen opened their South Pasadena home to welcome incoming medical students, fostering connections with the next generation of healthcare professionals.

In her husband’s role as President and CEO of Huntington Hospital, Weta’s community contributions expanded further. The couple enjoyed a vibrant social life, including membership at the Valley Hunt Club, playing tennis at Live Oaks, attending USC football games, and annual family trips to Cabo San Lucas with their sons and granddaughters.

Weta’s life took a poignant turn when Allen passed away in 2023. She continued to reside in Newport Beach, surrounded by family and friends. She is survived by her sons John and Bill, daughter-in-law Lisa, and her cherished grandchildren, including Amanda Buntmann and Riley Sakioka, as well as her great-grandchildren, whom she adored.

The family has opted for a private service to honor Weta’s memory. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pasadena Humane Society and Huntington Memorial Hospital, reflecting her lifelong dedication to the community and its well-being. Weta Mathies’ legacy of kindness, service, and love will continue to resonate through her family and the many lives she touched throughout her remarkable journey.
