Stephenville Claims Seventh State Championship with 10-0 Win

In a commanding display of defense, the Stephenville Yellowjackets secured their seventh state championship title with a 10-0 victory over the Kilgore Bulldogs in the Class 4A Division I title game held on March 15, 2024, at AT&T Stadium. This triumph marked a perfect season for Stephenville, which finished with a 16-0 record.

The game was characterized by exceptional defensive plays, with Stephenville’s defense recording four takeaways, including three interceptions and a fumble recovery. Notably, Willis Jackson was instrumental, contributing two of those interceptions and thwarting Kilgore’s attempts to score. This is significant as Kilgore had not experienced a shutout since the 2019 season.

Both teams entered the championship with formidable defenses, resulting in a scoreless first half. Kilgore, which held a 14-2 record at the season’s end, was seeking redemption after losing to Celina in the previous year’s final. The Bulldogs had previously won the championship in 2004 and reached the finals in 2013 and 2023.

After a tense first half, Stephenville broke the deadlock just minutes into the third quarter. Trot Jordan connected with Adan Jerkins for a 40-yard touchdown pass, giving the Yellowjackets a 6-0 lead. Following that, Brighton DeVivo extended the lead with a successful 41-yard field goal, putting Stephenville ahead 10-0 with under nine minutes remaining in the game.

Kilgore’s offense struggled to respond effectively throughout the match. They had a promising opportunity to score in the first half when Bi’Syn Williams returned a fumble deep into Stephenville territory. However, a key interception by Jackson in the end zone halted that drive.

As the game progressed, Kilgore’s best chance to narrow the gap came when Eddie Jimenez missed a 46-yard field goal attempt in the third quarter. Late in the game, Stephenville’s defense continued to dominate, with Jackson securing his second interception, effectively sealing the victory.

With this win, the Yellowjackets join the ranks of past championship teams from 1993, 1994, 1998, 1999, 2012, and 2021. This achievement emphasizes their consistent excellence in high school football, as they continue to build a legacy of success in the sport.
