East Austin Volunteers Build Wheelchair Ramp Celebrating 40 Years of Accessibility
On October 14, 2023, volunteers in East Austin came together to construct a wheelchair ramp for local resident Jimmy Garcia, whose mobility had been limited by stairs. This effort was part of the Texas Ramp Project, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary. For four decades, the initiative has focused on enhancing accessibility and independence for individuals facing physical barriers.
Garcia, who previously relied on family members to enter his home, expressed his gratitude for the new ramp. “I feel grateful. I appreciate it,” he told CBS Austin. “It’s a good program.” The ramp built for him is one of 40 planned by the nonprofit as part of its anniversary celebrations, demonstrating a commitment to improving lives across Texas.
Transforming Lives Through Community Support
Jackie Gardener, who leads the construction initiative, emphasized the life-changing impact of each ramp. The Texas Ramp Project has helped over 30,000 Texans during its history. “It is such a special feeling of joy to be able to see a client take a look at their ramp and know that in less than a day, we’ve really changed somebody’s life,” Gardener shared with CBS Austin.
In the Austin Central Region, Randy Kerkman coordinates efforts in Travis and Bastrop counties, where volunteers typically construct up to 115 ramps each year. The satisfaction felt by volunteers is profound, as Kerkman noted, “You can see it in their eyes—the freedom they have now to move in and out of their homes.” This sentiment reflects the broader community’s commitment to fostering accessibility.
Aiding Veterans and the Community
The Texas Ramp Project also focuses on supporting veterans. One such beneficiary, Tom Cook, an 86-year-old Air Force veteran, praised the ramp built for him by a Houston church group. “It changed my life a whole lot because the ramp helps me out because I use a walker,” he stated to KVUE. This year alone, the project has constructed ramps for five veterans like Cook, with plans for additional builds continuing through the end of 2025.
With the backing of over 3,500 volunteers and generous community donations, including over $100,000 from WellMed and the WellMed Charitable Foundation, the Texas Ramp Project is poised to continue its mission. Each ramp built not only enhances safety but also ensures more accessible homes for Texans with limited mobility.
The collaborative efforts in East Austin exemplify the power of community action in breaking down barriers and fostering inclusivity. As the Texas Ramp Project marks this significant milestone, it remains dedicated to transforming lives, one ramp at a time.
