Pope Leo XIV Urges Protection for Victims of Nigerian Violence

Pope Leo XIV expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with victims of violent attacks in Nigeria during his address following the Angelus prayer on February 8, 2024. The Pope called upon authorities to ensure the safety and protection of all citizens amid escalating violence that has resulted in significant loss of life.

“**It is with sorrow and concern that I learned of the recent attacks against various communities in Nigeria leading to a heavy loss of life**,” the Pope stated. He conveyed his heartfelt prayers to all affected by violence and terrorism, highlighting the need for urgent protective measures from government officials.

According to the Vatican agency Fides, armed groups have executed a series of brutal assaults in states including **Kaduna** and **Niger**. These attacks have included killings, kidnappings, and the destruction of property, including police stations and churches. One notable incident involved the abduction of **Father Nathaniel Asuwaye**, the parish priest of Holy Trinity Parish in Karku. The **Diocese of Kafanchan** has confirmed the kidnapping and has entrusted the safety of all captives to the intercession of the **Blessed Virgin Mary**.

In his remarks preceding the Angelus prayer, Pope Leo XIV reflected on a Gospel passage where Jesus refers to his disciples as “the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world.” He connected this message to the theme of authentic Christian joy. “**Indeed, it is genuine joy that gives flavor to life and brings to light something that was not there before**,” he noted. The Pope emphasized that true joy stems from a life lived in accordance with Christ’s teachings, urging the faithful to remain steadfast in their values despite challenges.

Pope Leo XIV acknowledged the pain of losing joy and purpose, stating, “Indeed, it is painful to lose flavor and give up joy; yet it is possible to have this wound in one’s heart.” He assured believers that even deep wounds can be healed through the acceptance of the Beatitudes and a commitment to the Gospel.

He encouraged acts of charity and community support, emphasizing that joy can be rekindled through concrete actions, particularly those rooted in the **Eucharist**. “The true flavor,” he explained, “is found every Sunday in the Bread that is broken, which is a life given and a silent love.”

After the Angelus, the Pope also celebrated the beatification of **Father Salvatore Valera Parra** in **Huércal-Overa**, Spain, praising him as a devoted parish priest. He remarked that Father Parra’s life serves as an inspiration for contemporary priests to embody humility and dedication to their communities.

In recognition of **St. Josephine Bakhita**, the Pope highlighted the observance of the **World Day of Prayer and Reflection Against Human Trafficking**, thanking those working to combat modern forms of slavery. He reiterated, “**Peace begins with dignity!**”

The Pope further extended his prayers to communities affected by natural disasters, including floods and landslides in **Portugal**, **Morocco**, **Spain**—particularly in **Grazalema**—and southern **Italy**, specifically **Niscemi** in **Sicily**.
