Remembering Mary Skroch Grogan: A Life of Love and Accomplishment

Mary Skroch Grogan, a cherished figure known for her warmth and vibrant spirit, passed away on February 24, 2021. Born in Independence, Wisconsin, on December 20, 1929, she was the youngest of three children of Simon Skroch and Lucy Zilla. Her father served as the local Postmaster and was a respected tenor in the community, while her mother actively participated in various women’s organizations.

Mary’s early life was marked by her involvement in the high school band, where she played the trombone, earning considerable recognition. After graduating from Independence High School, she attended the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire. Upon completion of her studies, she took to the skies as a stewardess with Eastern Airlines, a role that introduced her to a world of travel and adventure.

In September 20, 1954, Mary married Stanley J. Grogan Jr. in Washington, D.C. Their union marked the beginning of a shared journey that included living in Europe and extensive travels throughout the continent and the Far East. Mary became a well-known breeder of Standard Poodles, operating her kennel, Yardcastle Kennels, for over sixty years. She was a prominent figure in the dog show community, regularly exhibiting her Poodles at events sanctioned by the American Kennel Club, where she received numerous awards and titles in both Obedience and Conformation.

Her daughter, Elder Mary M. Grogan of Sausalito Presbyterian Church, fondly remembered her mother, stating, “She was my North Star, my guide and my amazing support. She will be deeply and sorely missed.” Mary is survived by her husband, Colonel Stanley J. Grogan Jr., who sadly passed away shortly after her on February 24, 2021.

Mary’s family includes her daughter, Mary M. Grogan of Larkspur, California, and several nieces and nephews across the United States. They include Mary Kay Bormann (Clark) of Bismarck, North Dakota; Julie Karasch Sawyer (Tim) of La Crosse, Wisconsin; Daniel Karasch (Marcy) of Fox Point, Wisconsin; John Karasch (Terri) of Phoenix, Arizona; William Skroch (Mary) of Naperville, Illinois; Brian Skroch (Janet) of Independence, Wisconsin; Barbara Skroch Nelson (Mel) of Independence, Wisconsin; Betsy Skroch Brzowsky (Tom) of Holmen, Wisconsin; and Bridget Skroch (Chris) of Littleton, Colorado.

Mary is also survived by her sister-in-law Bernice Skroch of Independence, Wisconsin, along with other relatives in Kentfield, California, Independence, Wisconsin, and New York, New York. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister and brother-in-law, Florence Skroch Karasch (A.J. Karasch), and her brother Robert Skroch.
