Qatar has strengthened its position in Olympic politics with the election of Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani as the new president of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). This decision took place on Monday during the OCA’s annual assembly in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Sheikh Joaan was the sole candidate nominated to fill the vacancy left by Randir Singh of India, who resigned due to health issues. The assembly confirmed his election with a decisive 44 votes, while one member abstained. His term is set to continue until 2028.

In his acceptance speech, Sheikh Joaan expressed pride and a sense of duty, stating, “I stand before you today with feelings of great pride and responsibility.” His election reflects a growing influence for Qatar in the global sports arena, particularly as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) considers the selection process for the 2036 Summer Games. Sheikh Joaan also serves as the president of the Qatar Olympic Committee and holds a position as the senior vice president of the global association of national Olympic bodies, known as ANOC.

Qatar is emerging as a strong contender in the race to host the 2036 Summer Games, alongside India and Saudi Arabia. The ongoing discussions within the IOC about future Olympic locations are expected to intensify as member countries prepare their bids. In addition to its Olympic ambitions, Qatar is set to host the multi-sport Asian Games in 2030 and 2034, further solidifying its role in international sports.

The next major event for the OCA is the upcoming Asian Games, scheduled to begin in September in Aichi–Nagoya, Japan. As Qatar navigates its expanded role within the Olympic framework, the emirate’s strategic investments in sports infrastructure and events signal a commitment to becoming a key player on the global stage.
