Zionsville’s Carpenter Nature Preserve Receives $25,000 Grant

A new chapter in conservation begins in Zionsville, Indiana, as the local community celebrates a significant milestone. The Zionsville Park Foundation’s Carpenter Nature Preserve has been awarded a generous grant of $25,000 from the Meridian Foundation, aimed at supporting the ongoing development of this essential green space. May 2024 marks the opening of the first phase of the Carpenter Nature Preserve, which will introduce a variety of amenities including a new pavilion, playground, scenic overlook, walkway, and multiple nature trails. Tim Casady, a representative of the Zionsville Parks Foundation, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “This could be a magnet, a regional beautiful nature preserve with a nature center that’s attractive to people from all over central Indiana.”

The transformation from a proposed housing development to a protected nature preserve represents a significant conservation achievement for Zionsville. Residents have embraced this effort, viewing it as a crucial step toward maintaining the community’s natural charm amidst its rapid expansion.

Bernadette Shekleton, a Zionsville resident who moved to the area four years ago, reflects on the changes, saying, “I really loved some of the rural nature of the place, and now I see building all over the place, so I’m really happy that they’re preserving something.” Another local, Eric Gingerich, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of having a natural retreat: “You need someplace to get away from everyday life and see nature, and I think it’s great.”
