Community Remembers Julia “Pat” Hartney Clark for Dedication and Love

Julia “Pat” Hartney Clark, a beloved educator and community member, passed away in 2025 at the age of 96. Born on January 14, 1929, in San Francisco, Pat was known for her deep commitment to her family, her faith, and her role in education. A proud first-generation Irish American, she spent her formative years in the Sunset District, cherishing her heritage and nurturing lifelong friendships with her Irish cousins.

Pat’s educational journey began at St. Anne of the Sunset grammar school and continued through Presentation High School and Holy Names College in Oakland, California. After earning her teaching credential, she embarked on a career dedicated to nurturing young minds. Her early teaching experiences included stints at Francis Scott Key Elementary School in San Francisco and the Army Forces Far East Dependent Schools in Japan, where she taught military families’ children.

Upon returning to the United States, Pat continued her passion for education at Saint Isabella’s Catholic Church in Terra Linda, where she served as a teacher for many years. Her commitment to her parish and community was evident throughout her life, particularly after marrying Lawrence “Larry” Clark in 1960. Together, they settled in Terra Linda, where they raised their four children and shared a fulfilling marriage until Larry’s passing in 2020.

Pat’s life was marked by her unwavering dedication to her family and community. She began her role as a caretaker in her teenage years when her mother fell ill, an experience that shaped her compassionate nature. Throughout her life, she lovingly cared for her children and supported Larry during his final years. Her commitment extended beyond her immediate family; she volunteered to bring the Eucharist to the sick and dedicated time to Nazareth House and St. Isabella’s.

Legacy of Kindness and Community Service

Pat was known for her inviting spirit, often welcoming friends and family to her kitchen table. She listened without judgment, creating a safe space for those in need of a confidant. Her humility and loyalty endeared her to many, making her a cherished presence in the lives of all who knew her.

Survived by her four children—Liz, Shelley, Kevin, and Dana—Pat also leaves behind ten grandchildren who brought her immense joy. The family expressed deep gratitude for the devoted care provided by her Fijian caretakers and her daughter Shelley, who mirrored Pat’s selflessness throughout her life.

In a heartfelt tribute, her family acknowledged the significant impact of relatives and friends who visited and spent time with Pat during her later years, providing her with comfort and compassion. They noted, “Mom, we are forever grateful for the life you gave us, the way you modeled kindness and generosity toward others, along with strength, perseverance, grace, poise, and Irish grit.”

Pat’s family reflected on her love for simple pleasures, envisioning her enjoying a Caramel Latte with extra whip and caramel, highlighting her joyful spirit even in memory.

A funeral Mass will be held in Pat’s honor at 10:30 on January 15, 2026, at St. Isabella’s Catholic Church, located at One Trinity Way, San Rafael, CA 94903. Following the service, a reception will take place at the Embassy Suites, 101 McInnis Pkwy, San Rafael, CA 94903. The family encourages those wishing to honor Pat’s memory to consider planting a living memorial or sending flowers.
