Dearborn Receives $101K Grant to Enhance Gun Safety Initiative

The City of Dearborn has secured a grant of $101,570 from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services to enhance community-focused gun safety initiatives. This funding is part of a comprehensive effort to promote responsible gun ownership while addressing both unintentional and intentional firearm-related injuries within the community.

Dearborn’s Mayor, Abdullah H. Hammoud, underscored the initiative’s significance, stating, “Firearm injury prevention is a public health and safety priority, reinforced by our Health in All Policies approach.” This proactive stance emphasizes the city’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents.

The funding will be allocated towards community outreach programs, which will include the distribution of firearm safety kits comprising gun locks and lockboxes, along with educational materials aimed at informing the public about safe firearm practices.

Collaborative Efforts Enhance Community Engagement

The initiative represents a collaborative effort among various city departments. The Department of Public Health will engage closely with the Dearborn Police Department and other relevant stakeholders to foster a community-centric approach to firearm safety. Chief of Police Issa Shahin emphasized the importance of this teamwork, stating, “Firearm safety is a shared responsibility, and building trust through education and safe storage is essential to keeping our community safe.”

In addition, the project acknowledges the value of academic partnerships in enhancing public health strategies. Sara Elhasan, a Public Health Advisor, noted that the investment in fellows such as Julia Ginter-Berriman has played a crucial role in shaping and strengthening the grant proposal. This approach illustrates Dearborn’s commitment to integrating research into practical applications for community health.
