Maine’s Secretary of State, Shenna Bellows, has referred the investigation into improperly delivered absentee ballots in Newburgh to the state attorney general’s office. This decision comes after a concerning incident involving the delivery of 250 ballots to a Newburgh resident in an Amazon box.

The ballots in question were reported to be blank and could not be cast without the corresponding signed envelopes. Bellows noted that the city of Ellsworth also experienced complications, receiving a box that was missing its ballots on the same day the Newburgh resident received theirs. The sequence of events remains unclear, raising questions about the handling of absentee ballots.

Election Day proceeded without incident, and state officials have assured the public that the integrity of the election process remains intact. “I will promise you that no one wants answers to this more than I do,” Bellows stated, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation. “This is a very serious matter, but I am also confident that the checks and the balances in the system worked, and that Maine should be really proud of the 2025 election, that it was free, safe and secure.”

The investigation will now be handled by the attorney general’s office, the designated authority for addressing any violations of election law in Maine. The situation highlights the importance of maintaining transparency and trust in the electoral process. The state officials have reiterated that the ballots cannot be used without the proper signed envelopes, mitigating the potential for any misuse.

As the investigation unfolds, residents are encouraged to remain informed about the developments surrounding this significant electoral issue.
