Operation Holiday Supports Families in Need Ahead of Christmas
Families facing economic challenges are receiving essential support this holiday season through Operation Holiday, a community initiative based in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. The program, now in its 35th year, aims to ensure that children in need have gifts to open on Christmas morning and meals to enjoy during the festive season.
Isabel, a mother of three from the Pottsgrove area, reflects on her own struggles and the assistance she has received. Due to health issues, Isabel, whose name has been changed for privacy, has been unable to work. She and her daughters have benefited significantly from the resources provided by the Montgomery County Assistance Office, which has helped them access services such as food stamps and cash assistance. “They’ve helped me out a lot with a number of things, for years,” she shared.
Despite facing difficulties, including a broken heating system and ongoing car troubles, Isabel remains positive. “I’m dealing with things. But I’m getting by,” she stated. Her family managed to celebrate Thanksgiving with the help of local food pantries and the Salvation Army, and they are now preparing for Christmas. Isabel’s oldest daughter has requested gift cards and art supplies, while the younger two are hoping for skin care products, small electronics, and winter clothing.
The recent budget stalemates at both state and federal levels have created additional financial strain for families like Isabel’s. “I had to push around my bills, and what I’m paying, and then use it for food,” she explained. Despite these challenges, she feels fortunate. “I’m still grateful for what I have,” she added.
Operation Holiday was established in 1991 to assist families in difficult situations during the holiday season. The initiative aims to provide food and gifts to children, ensuring that families can celebrate together. Over the years, it has expanded its reach, now serving thousands in Berks, Chester, and Montgomery counties. Last year alone, the program garnered nearly $85,000 in donations, which helped provide gift cards to 366 children and grocery gift cards to 189 families.
This year, Operation Holiday has partnered with 21 agencies in the tri-county area, referring 199 families with 403 children for food and gifts. All funds raised are utilized locally, with no overhead costs. Contributions are managed by volunteers from the MediaNews Group in a nonprofit foundation account, ensuring that all donations directly benefit the families in need.
Gift cards for grocery stores are distributed to families, allowing them to purchase holiday meal ingredients and pantry staples. Weis Markets has been a key partner, supporting food purchases and gift card distribution. Additionally, gift cards for children aged 16 and under are provided through Boscov’s, allowing families to choose appropriate gifts.
Operation Holiday only accepts families referred by partnering agencies, ensuring targeted assistance to those who need it most. The initiative is fully funded by reader contributions, all of which are tax-deductible. Donations can be made online via a secure portal through the TriCounty Community Network, or by mailing checks to designated addresses in Pottstown and Lansdale, Pennsylvania.
As Isabel continues to navigate her challenges, she remains committed to helping others in her community. “I help out a few people I know when they need help with food, if I have it,” she mentioned. Her willingness to give back reflects the spirit of Operation Holiday, which aims to create a supportive network for families during the holiday season and beyond.
