A visit by Education Secretary Linda McMahon to Cedar Drive Middle School in Colts Neck, New Jersey, sparked significant backlash among parents after they were barred from attending an event they believed was open to the public. The event, featuring representatives from the late Charlie Kirk’s organization, Turning Point USA (TPUSA), was advertised as a civics discussion titled “History Rocks!” and was scheduled for the morning of March 15, 2024.

Parents received a memo indicating they were welcome to join the meeting at 7:45 AM, under the stipulations of the Open Public Meetings Act. However, upon their arrival, parents were denied entry, leading to confusion and frustration. Local reporter Laura Haefli covered the story, noting that parents expressed concerns over the event’s content and the lack of transparency.

“They’re [McMahon’s entourage] are talking about what they believe the Constitution means. And this is frustrating parents for a number of reasons,” Haefli reported. Parents were particularly worried about the ultra-conservative values associated with TPUSA, fearing these perspectives might influence school discussions.

One parent, Allison Denoia, articulated her concerns, saying, “We don’t know what’s being said and that’s what’s problematic for people.” She added, “Public schools are supposed to be nonpartisan. And that’s not what’s happening here,” emphasizing the need for parental involvement in school events.

The Colts Neck Board of Education has established a parental bill of rights that mandates prior notification about guest speakers and presentations, particularly those addressing sensitive topics. Haefli highlighted that parents felt they were not adequately informed about the event. “They believe they were not given enough advance notice for this event,” she stated.

The incident raises broader questions about communication between schools and parents, particularly regarding the influence of external organizations on educational content. As discussions about educational policy and parental rights continue, this event stands as a significant example of the tensions surrounding public education in the United States.

Parents in Colts Neck and beyond are left grappling with the implications of this event, questioning the extent of their involvement in shaping their children’s education and the values being imparted within public schools.
