Veterans Deserve More Than Gratitude—Calls for Systemic Change
Veterans in the United States have long received expressions of gratitude for their service, particularly on Veterans Day. However, Joe H. Pickering Jr., a veteran who served during the Berlin Crisis from 1961 to 1962, urges for a deeper acknowledgment of their sacrifices. He emphasizes that a simple “thank you” is insufficient when many veterans have given so much more.
Reflecting on his experiences, Pickering recalls his friend, a Bronze Star recipient who faced grave risks during military engagements. He highlights the tense atmosphere of the Berlin Crisis, where allied forces were poised to respond to potential attacks. Thankfully, no such attack occurred, but the memory underscores the sacrifices made by veterans.
Systemic Issues Facing Veterans and Their Care
Pickering argues that honoring veterans requires more than verbal appreciation; it necessitates active involvement in civic duties. He calls on Americans to hold their Congress and presidents accountable for decisions that affect national security and veterans’ well-being. Drawing from historical context, he cites President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who warned against the influence of the “military-industrial complex” in his final address.
The concern extends to the staggering budget of the U.S. Department of Defense, which reaches nearly $1 trillion annually. Pickering points out that the department has failed to pass an audit for seven consecutive years, suggesting a lack of accountability within Congress. He argues that this budget should not only aim to fortify military defenses but also prioritize the health and safety of American citizens.
The author also highlights the troubling trend of increased violence and suicides among veterans, particularly in Maine. He notes the devastating impact of the Lewiston tragedy, emphasizing the lack of sufficient treatment options for those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
A Call for Legislative Action
According to Pickering, comprehensive mental health services are crucial for veterans returning home. He criticizes Congress for its failure to adequately fund mental health care, asserting that legislative priorities should align with the needs of the American people rather than the interests of the military-industrial complex.
He specifically mentions the federal Institutions for Mental Diseases (IMD) Exclusion Law, which he describes as a long-standing impediment to mental health funding. This law restricts federal payments for inpatient psychiatric care in facilities with more than 16 beds, adversely affecting millions of Americans. Pickering argues that this exclusion not only strains state resources but also leads to tragic outcomes, including unnecessary loss of life.
The urgency of reforming this law is underscored by a quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: “Justice delayed is justice denied.” Pickering calls upon Maine’s congressional delegation to co-sponsor a bill aimed at abolishing the IMD Exclusion.
In closing, Pickering emphasizes the interconnectedness of mental and physical health, advocating for a holistic approach to healthcare that prioritizes all aspects of well-being. He expresses hope for a future where mental health is regarded with the same seriousness as physical health, urging society to move beyond stigmas associated with mental illness.
The message is clear: veterans deserve not just thanks, but systemic changes that ensure their sacrifices are honored through meaningful action and support.
