Rob Richardson Seeks Second Term on Frankfort Board of Commissioners

Rob Richardson is campaigning for a second term on the Frankfort Board of Commissioners. After two years in office, he aims to continue improving city operations and enhancing community life. “Serving as an elected official has given me better insight into the scope of all city operations,” he stated, emphasizing his commitment to a common-sense approach to governance.

During his first term, Richardson noted several key accomplishments, particularly the city government’s adherence to its budget and the generation of a surplus through prudent fiscal management. “This was a big priority of mine,” he explained, highlighting the challenges of finding new revenue streams while also identifying areas for budget cuts. One of his initiatives, the acquisition of OpenGov, aims to boost efficiency within the finance department, enabling better communication across city departments.

Richardson also pointed to the construction of the Frankfort Fire Department Station 1 on the former Pic-Pac property on West Second Street. He believes this project will enhance the city’s fire and emergency medical services, providing first responders with state-of-the-art technology and training that will ultimately benefit local residents.

In addressing long-term infrastructure needs, he mentioned his support for The Paddocks development in West Frankfort. “This development will increase revenues as it grows over the years,” he stated, highlighting its potential economic impact on the area.

Reflecting on his experiences as a city commissioner, Richardson recalled advice from a former commissioner about the extensive time commitment required for the role. He has maintained a weekly meeting with the city manager to discuss operations and agenda items, a practice he believes has been crucial for effective governance. “Serving requires research, dedication, and the willingness to learn,” he added.

A graduate of Madison Central High School, Richardson holds a Bachelor of Science in police administration from Eastern Kentucky University. After moving to Frankfort in 1994 as a patrol officer with the Frankfort Police Department, he advanced through the ranks to become assistant police chief before retiring in 2017. He now serves as a law enforcement liaison with the Kentucky Association Chiefs of Police, where he engages with legislative needs and fosters communication between law enforcement agencies and state government.

Richardson’s role allows him to connect with various police chiefs and elected officials, providing insights into the challenges facing other communities, which he believes are relevant to Frankfort. “These relationships have led to discussions about solutions that can be adapted for our city,” he stated.

Looking ahead, Richardson outlined his top priorities for the upcoming term. He plans to focus on expanding the city’s sewer system, which he believes will promote growth and economic development. Enhancing public safety and ensuring first responders have the necessary resources and training also rank high on his agenda. Additionally, he aims to maintain the city’s budgetary discipline while identifying unnecessary expenditures.

“Although there has been concern with the budget, city staff, along with strategic planning, has ensured that resources are allocated effectively contributing to the financial health of the city,” he remarked.

Richardson has taken a personal interest in the development of a downtown convention and meeting center, which he believes will stimulate economic growth and complement discussions surrounding renovations to the Capital Plaza Hotel. Housing development is another critical area of focus due to a significant shortage of residential properties in the city.

“We have property zoned for residential development on the west side of Frankfort,” he noted. “With increased employment opportunities, it is essential to provide housing options to retain our workforce, thereby enhancing our tax base.”

In addition to housing and infrastructure, he supports initiatives aimed at riverfront development, which could boost tourism, and is exploring options for a new swimming pool or recreation center.

Richardson lives in Frankfort with his wife, Kim, and their three daughters, Kolby, 29; Lexie, 28; and Maggie, 21. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve on the city commission and remains committed to representing his community. “I love hearing from the citizens of Frankfort about their needs and concerns, and I look forward to continuing to serve,” he concluded, expressing hope for reelection to a second term.
