Sweeney’s Saloon Encourages Bipartisanship with Free Meals
In a unique initiative aimed at fostering bipartisanship, Sweeney’s Saloon in St. Paul, Minnesota, is offering free meals to pairs of legislators from opposing political parties. The offer, which began recently, encourages Democrats and Republicans to dine together during the current legislative session.
Owner Will Rolf announced that any table consisting of both Democratic and Republican politicians will receive the bar’s Poor Man Special along with a complimentary beer or soda. Rolf aims to create an environment where dialogue can flourish, stating, “the idea grew out of the same question many Minnesotans are asking: ‘What can I do, from where I sit, to help lower the temperature?’”
Aiming for Connection in a Divided Climate
Rolf, who has owned Sweeney’s Saloon for a little over a year, believes neighborhood bars play a crucial role in bridging divides. He remarked, “You don’t have to think alike to sit at the same table. You just have to show up willing to talk like neighbors.” The offer is designed to provide a space where legislators can engage in face-to-face discussions instead of relying solely on press releases.
While Rolf acknowledges that he cannot solve political issues, he emphasizes the importance of fostering communication among legislators. “If two legislators want to take an hour to talk face-to-face instead of through press releases, I’m happy to buy them a meal,” he added.
The Poor Man Special, which changes daily, is priced at $9.99 for patrons who are not legislators and includes the option of a free soda or a $3 beer.
Location and Further Information
Sweeney’s Saloon is located at 96 N. Dale St., St. Paul, and has been a gathering place for locals seeking camaraderie over food and drinks. Rolf’s initiative reflects a growing desire among citizens for their elected officials to engage meaningfully across party lines.
For those interested in more details about the bar or the special offer, Sweeney’s Saloon can be contacted at 612-396-0701 or visited online at sweeneyssaloon.com.
This effort highlights the potential for community venues to play an active role in political discourse, inviting legislators to break bread together in the spirit of cooperation and understanding.
