Vanguardia’s CEO Arrested, Charges Dropped Amid Legal Controversy

The CEO of Vanguardia, Armando Castilla, was detained on January 9, 2023, at Monterrey airport by authorities in the State of Nuevo León. This followed an arrest warrant issued by the state’s Attorney General’s Office, which accused him of involvement in an illegal real estate transaction. However, the charges were swiftly dropped the next day after it was revealed that Castilla was not in Mexico at the time of the alleged incident.

Castilla described the situation as a coordinated effort by law enforcement, stating, “They designed an elaborate operation involving at least 36 officers and a dozen vehicles” to ensure his arrest. Upon his detention, he claimed that authorities intended to formally charge him and argue for pre-trial detention based on a supposed “risk of flight.” Evidence later confirmed his innocence, documenting that he was attending an international media event in Colombia during the period in question, supported by immigration stamps in his passport.

Allegations of Systematic Targeting

Castilla asserted that the case against him was fabricated, stating, “They invented a story which was turned into a fictitious criminal case.” This incident marks the latest in a series of legal challenges faced by both Castilla and Vanguardia, which have reportedly stemmed from the publication’s investigative reporting in 2016. At that time, Vanguardia reported on the arrest of Humberto Moreira, the former governor of Coahuila, who was under investigation for money laundering and connections to organized crime.

Since then, Vanguardia has been subjected to numerous legal proceedings, including a commercial lawsuit in Coahuila that seeks the seizure and sale of the media company. Reports indicate that the legal processes have been marred by inconsistencies, prompting the Mexican Supreme Court of Justice to intervene in November 2025 to address these irregularities.

Independent analyses of the initial complaint against Castilla revealed significant flaws. The investigation into the alleged real estate deal lacked essential documentation and appeared to rely primarily on the testimony of a notary with professional ties to Moreira. This further undermined the credibility of the accusations.

Calls for Legal Protections

The World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) has expressed support for Castilla and his colleagues at Vanguardia in their struggle against what they describe as systemic judicial harassment. WAN-IFRA urged Mexican authorities to take decisive action against those responsible for the unfounded accusations and to put an end to the ongoing legal threats faced by the publication.

“Protecting journalists and media organisations from the threat of legal persecution is vital to ensuring a free press can perform its critical role in society,” said Andrew Heslop, WAN-IFRA’s Executive Director for Media Freedom.

He emphasized the need for effective legal protections and consistent enforcement of the rule of law in a country where the safety of journalists is a daily concern.
