A physician’s testimony has raised serious concerns regarding the actions of Border Patrol agents following the shooting of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, in Minneapolis on March 2024. The doctor, who has chosen to remain anonymous, reported that instead of attempting to save Pretti’s life, the agents were focused on assessing his injuries while he bled on the ground.

The incident has amplified scrutiny of the Border Patrol and Department of Homeland Security (DHS), whose officials claimed Pretti posed a threat during the altercation. According to their account, Pretti attempted to reach for a weapon, prompting the use of deadly force. The doctor’s observations starkly contradict these assertions, suggesting that Pretti was not aggressive but rather vocal in his objections to the agents’ presence.

In the sworn court filing, the physician described how he witnessed multiple Border Patrol agents draw their weapons and subsequently shoot Pretti multiple times. “Suddenly, an ICE agent shoved him to the ground,” the doctor recounted. “I saw at least four ICE agents point guns at the man. I then saw the agents shoot the man at least six or seven times.”

Upon rushing to the scene, the doctor identified himself as a medical professional and sought to assist the victim. He was met with resistance from the agents, who demanded to see his physician’s license. “Which I obviously didn’t have,” he noted, expressing frustration at their lack of urgency to provide medical aid.

Despite the critical condition of Pretti, the physician observed no attempts by the agents to perform basic life-saving measures such as CPR. “They appeared to be counting his bullet wounds instead of attending to him,” he stated. After persistent efforts, the doctor was eventually allowed to check Pretti, who was lying on his side—an alarming position for a gunshot victim.

Upon confirming that Pretti had no pulse, the physician began CPR. He noted that Pretti had multiple bullet wounds, including at least three in his back and one on his upper chest. Medical personnel arrived shortly after, taking over the situation.

The doctor’s emotional response to the incident was profound. He described his distress: “When I returned to my apartment, I was extremely distraught… I was sobbing and shaking uncontrollably.” Following the incident, protests erupted in the area, and as tear gas from the demonstrations seeped into his home, he felt compelled to leave for a friend’s residence.

Pretti’s shooting has intensified backlash against federal agents in Minneapolis, where tensions have already been high. Protests have become commonplace, particularly after another shooting incident involving federal agents that resulted in the death of Renee Good, a 37-year-old protestor.

Despite substantial video evidence from the scene, the DHS maintains that Pretti’s actions were aggressive, labeling him as someone who “wanted to do maximum damage and massacre law enforcement.” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem referred to Pretti’s behavior as “domestic terrorism,” while White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller characterized him as an “assassin.”

These claims are met with skepticism from the doctor, who asserts that Pretti was not threatening the agents or the public but was expressing his dissent against their presence. “He was just yelling at the agents,” the doctor clarified in the filing.

As the situation unfolds, the doctor has expressed uncertainty about returning to his home, stating, “I do not feel safe in my city.” The severe implications of this incident continue to reverberate throughout the community, prompting ongoing discussions about the conduct of federal agents and the broader implications for civil rights and public safety.
