Jarrell Miller Offers Support to Anthony Joshua After Tragic Loss
Anthony Joshua received an unexpected show of support from his former rival, Jarrell Miller, following a tragic car accident that resulted in the deaths of Joshua’s close associates. On December 29, 2023, while vacationing in Nigeria, Joshua was involved in a fatal crash that claimed the lives of his personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength coach, Sina Ghami. The incident occurred when their vehicle collided with a stationary truck on a highway near Lagos.
Upon learning of Joshua’s devastating loss, Miller, who is scheduled to fight Kingsley Ibeh on January 31 at Madison Square Garden, reached out to express his condolences. In a heartfelt Instagram video, Miller stated, “We ain’t friends but as [a] warrior and human being my heart goes out to you. Prayers go out to you your friends and family.” His message resonated deeply, particularly given the history of their contentious rivalry.
The relationship between Joshua and Miller has been marked by intense verbal exchanges and personal jabs over the years. The two were set to face off in a heavyweight title bout in June 2019, which would have marked Joshua’s U.S. debut. However, Miller tested positive for multiple banned substances, including GW1516, HGH, and EPO, leading to his replacement by Andy Ruiz Jr., who achieved a stunning upset victory.
Despite their tumultuous past, Miller acknowledged the importance of supporting one another during difficult times. He told Mirror U.S. Sports, “I really feel bad for him. I felt like, you know what? I got to let that brother know, ‘Listen, man, me and you might have boxing beef and all that. But we are brothers at the end of the day.’”
Miller’s empathy is rooted in his own experiences with loss. As a teenager, he faced the tragic deaths of two close friends in motorcycle accidents. Reflecting on these experiences, he shared, “It hurts my heart just seeing that and knowing it’s [Joshua’s] right hand guy… We need daily motivation, daily speeches with our ride or die boys. And when you lose that, man, it takes a lot out of you.”
Joshua’s future in boxing remains uncertain following this tragedy. While he has recently been spotted training, promoter Eddie Hearn emphasized that Joshua needs time to heal. Miller expressed hope that Joshua would not step away from the sport entirely. “Nobody 100% knows, but I would like him to come back,” Miller said. “I think he should fight through it… because you don’t want to retire in five, seven years down the line, and that’s the last thing you remember about your friends.”
The boxing community has rallied around Joshua during this challenging period, underscoring the notion that, in the face of personal tragedies, the sport can foster connections that transcend rivalry. As Joshua navigates this profound loss, the support from even his fiercest opponents serves as a reminder of the shared humanity within the sport.
