Lakers Fall Short Against Sauk Rapids-Rice in Close Meet

The Detroit Lakes boys swimming and diving team faced a tough challenge on January 15, 2024, as they hosted Central Lakes Conference rival Sauk Rapids-Rice. Despite strong individual performances, the Lakers fell short, losing the dual meet with a final score of **100-82** at the Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center.

Strong performances came from multiple Lakers, particularly from **Ben Mathiason**, who showcased his skills in the pool. He achieved a first-place finish in the **200-yard freestyle** with a time of **1:55.08**. Mathiason also contributed to the team’s success in the **200-yard freestyle relay**, where he teamed up with **Andrew Barberg**, **Alex Mack**, and **Henry Mathiason** to secure a first-place finish in **1:38.38**. Additionally, this relay team displayed their strength again in the **400-yard freestyle relay**, earning second place with a time of **3:45.33**.

The Lakers continued to show depth in their roster. **Emmett Stuewe** claimed first place in the **200-yard individual medley** with a time of **2:33.65**, while **Lucas Lundberg** dominated the diving competition, finishing with a score of **233.70**. **Kade Muff** followed closely behind, securing second place with a score of **181.50**.

In the sprint events, **Paxtyn Steinmetz** made headlines by swimming to victory in the **100-yard freestyle** with a time of **1:05.07**. His teammates **Jameson Norberg** and **Liam Bennett** finished in second and third places, clocking in at **1:06.52** and **1:12.63**, respectively.

Despite the loss, the Lakers demonstrated commendable teamwork and resilience during the meet. The team will look to regroup and build on their performances as they prepare for their next challenge. They are scheduled to compete again on **January 17, 2024**, at the University of Minnesota Morris for the Section True Team Tournament.

As the season progresses, the Lakers aim to harness their competitive spirit and improve their standings in upcoming events.
