Nevada Bans Wayne Nix from Casinos Following Illegal Gambling Case
Nevada gaming regulators have officially prohibited former professional baseball player Wayne Joseph Nix from entering any licensed casino in the state. This decision follows his involvement in a significant illegal sports betting operation that has garnered federal investigation and implicated several high-profile individuals.
During a public meeting on February 26, 2026, the Nevada Gaming Commission unanimously voted to add Nix to the state’s List of Excluded Persons. This designation, commonly referred to as the casino blacklist, bars individuals who pose a threat to the integrity of regulated gaming from accessing licensed properties. The commission’s chairman stated that no further discussion was necessary before arriving at this conclusion.
The official order, released the following day, mandates that all nonrestricted license holders throughout Nevada must prevent Nix from entering their gaming facilities. Currently residing in Newport Coast, California, Nix has faced legal challenges since he was charged in 2022 with operating an illegal sports wagering business. This operation, which utilized an offshore website named Sand Island Sports, processed millions of dollars in bets over a span of more than six years, circumventing state gambling regulations.
In April 2022, Nix pleaded guilty to conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business and for filing a false tax return. He is scheduled for sentencing later this year, as the legal repercussions from this case continue to unfold.
Federal Investigations Expand Surrounding Nix’s Operations
The Nevada Gaming Commission’s decision arrives as federal authorities intensify their investigation into Nix’s extensive bookmaking network. In February 2026, a jury in Los Angeles convicted former Major League Baseball star Yasiel Puig of obstructing justice and making false statements in connection with the federal inquiry into Nix’s betting ring.
Prosecutors explained during Puig’s trial that he engaged in hundreds of sports wagers through a middleman associated with Nix’s operations, specifically noting that Puig bet nearly $1 million from May to September 2019. Some of these wagers were reportedly made at MLB stadiums before and after games.
When federal agents questioned Puig in 2022, he denied possessing critical knowledge about the betting activities and the individuals involved. Despite his initial denials, Puig was ultimately convicted on one count of obstruction and one count of making a false statement. His sentencing is anticipated in the coming spring.
Court documents from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California reveal that Puig incurred losses totaling approximately $282,900 early in 2019. Subsequently, he wired $200,000 to address part of his debts but continued wagering thereafter.
The broader federal investigation that ensnared Nix has also resulted in charges and plea agreements for several associates, accused of managing bets, collecting debts, and distributing payouts. Evidence presented during the investigations suggested that the operation generated millions while underreporting income to tax authorities.
As these legal proceedings continue, the implications for Nix and others involved may alter the landscape of sports betting and its regulation in Nevada and beyond. The ongoing scrutiny underscores the need for strict adherence to established gaming laws to maintain the integrity of regulated betting environments.
Through these developments, the gaming community in Nevada remains vigilant, as regulators aim to uphold the integrity of their licensed establishments and protect the interests of legitimate operators and patrons alike.
