Patrick Mahomes Sets Sights on Week 1 Return After Knee Surgery
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has announced his goal to return for Week 1 of the upcoming NFL season following knee surgery in December 2023. The surgery was aimed at repairing his torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and lateral collateral ligament (LCL), which he sustained during a disappointing season for the Chiefs.
Speaking to the media on January 15, 2024, Mahomes provided an optimistic update on his recovery process. “Rehab is going great so far,” he stated. “I’m hitting all the checkpoints that the doctor wants you to do. Getting the strength and range of mobility back. So that’s been going great. Been doing all of it here in Kansas City so far.”
As he progresses through rehabilitation, Mahomes emphasized his commitment to being ready for the start of the season. He noted that doctors have indicated a potential return in time for the first game, although he acknowledged the uncertainty of the recovery process. “That’s my goal. I’ll try to prepare myself to be ready to play in that Week 1 and have no restrictions,” he added.
The 30-year-old quarterback expressed a desire to participate in organized team activities (OTAs) and training camp, indicating that while he must take a cautious approach, he is eager to contribute. “I have to take it slow, but at the same time I’ll push to be out there as much as I can be,” Mahomes said. He reassured fans that there is a solid plan in place for his recovery, emphasizing the importance of taking each day as it comes.
During the press conference, Mahomes was asked about the balance between wanting to return to the field and considering the long-term implications for his career. “That’s something that I have to think of, something the coaches and the organization all have to think of,” he explained. “But at the same time, that’s why they give me limits to where I can push it.” Reflecting on his determination, he remarked, “Knowing me, I’m going to push it to that exact limit every single day.”
The mental aspect of recovery has also weighed heavily on Mahomes. He credited his strong work ethic and the support of his wife, Brittany Mahomes, and their three children for helping him navigate the challenges of his injury. “It definitely weighs on your mental a little bit,” he admitted. “But for me, just having that goal in mind of trying to get better every day and knowing what I’m striving to do — which is to be ready as quickly as possible and have a chance to play in that opening day game — that’s kind of pushed me through some of those mental hurdles.”
Mahomes also acknowledged the difficulty in not being able to engage with his children as he usually would. “Having a great wife that’s able to keep me involved with the kids,” he said, “and the kids understanding that dad can’t necessarily be the dad that I usually am throwing them around the couches and stuff like that” has helped ease the situation.
As Mahomes continues his rehabilitation, the Chiefs and their fans remain hopeful for his swift return to the field. His determination and positive outlook not only reflect his commitment to the sport but also serve as an inspiration for others facing similar challenges.
