Rocco Commisso, Mediacom Chairman and Fiorentina Owner, Dies at 76
Rocco Commisso, the influential owner of the Italian soccer club Fiorentina and chairman of Mediacom Communications, passed away at the age of 76. His death was announced early Saturday by both Fiorentina and Mediacom, though they did not disclose a specific cause. The announcement from Fiorentina highlighted Commisso’s dedication to the club, stating, “After a prolonged period of medical treatment, our beloved president has left us, and today we all mourn his passing. His love for Fiorentina was the greatest gift he gave himself.”
Born in Calabria, Italy, Commisso immigrated to the United States at the age of 12. He built Mediacom into one of the largest cable television companies in the country before acquiring Fiorentina in 2019. Known for his candid opinions, Commisso often criticized the Italian bureaucracy, particularly regarding the challenges of constructing new stadiums. His outspoken nature earned him respect among fans and players alike.
Legacy in Soccer and Business
In addition to his role at Fiorentina, Commisso was also the owner of the New York Cosmos, a storied franchise in American soccer history. He played soccer at Columbia University, where he later contributed philanthropically. The university’s soccer stadium is named in his honor, reflecting his lasting impact on the sport at both the collegiate and professional levels.
Commisso celebrated significant achievements during his tenure with Fiorentina, including the team’s progression to the Conference League finals in 2023 and 2024. Despite these successes, the current season has posed challenges, with the team finding itself in the relegation zone of Serie A.
Fiorentina’s announcement of Commisso’s passing resonated deeply within the soccer community, as fans and players expressed their condolences. His leadership and passion for the club were evident, and he will be remembered for his contributions both on and off the field.
The loss of Rocco Commisso leaves a void in the worlds of both soccer and business, marking the end of an era for Fiorentina and Mediacom. His commitment to excellence and progress will continue to inspire future generations in these fields.
