WWE Royal Rumble 2026: What to Expect from Riyadh Showdown
The 2026 Royal Rumble is set to take place on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET from KAFD in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This event marks the third-longest-running annual WWE premium live event, having launched in 1988. Traditionally, the Royal Rumble serves as the inaugural premium live event of the year, setting the stage for the upcoming WrestleMania.
The show will feature both a men’s and women’s Royal Rumble match. The victors will earn the opportunity to challenge for a world championship at WrestleMania 42 in April in Las Vegas. Additionally, Drew McIntyre will defend his Undisputed WWE Championship against Sami Zayn, while AJ Styles will risk his in-ring career in a high-stakes match against Gunther.
Royal Rumble History and Records
The Royal Rumble has a rich history, beginning with its first match won by “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan in 1988. Duggan eliminated three opponents, including the final elimination of One Man Gang. The inaugural elimination was executed by Jake “The Snake” Roberts, who tossed “The Natural” Butch Reed over the top rope.
This year, Jey Uso aims to make history by winning back-to-back Royal Rumble matches. The feat has only been accomplished four times in the event’s history by legends like Hulk Hogan, Shawn Michaels, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and Cody Rhodes. Among active competitors, The Miz holds the record for most appearances in Royal Rumble matches with 16.
In terms of eliminations, Kane stands out with a record of 45. He also holds the record for most entries, having participated 18 times. Last year, Gunther set a new benchmark for the longest duration in a single Royal Rumble match by remaining in the ring for over 1 hour and 11 minutes.
Women’s Royal Rumble Insights
The women’s Royal Rumble has also made its mark since its inception in 2018, with Asuka emerging as the first winner. This year will see Liv Morgan and Natalya both participate in their eighth Rumble match, tying for the most appearances in women’s history. Notably, Nia Jax holds the all-time elimination record with a total of 27 over her appearances.
In the previous Royal Rumble, Roxanne Perez made headlines by spending the longest time in the ring during a women’s match, clocking in at 1 hour and 7 minutes. Charlotte Flair, a two-time winner, has consistently performed well, finishing among the final four participants in every Royal Rumble match she has entered.
McIntyre’s title defense against Zayn is particularly significant. Although McIntyre has previously defended his title during a Royal Rumble event, Zayn has never managed to defeat him in their six one-on-one encounters. This clash could mark a pivotal moment in both wrestlers’ careers.
As fans anticipate the thrilling matches ahead, the Royal Rumble weekend promises to deliver excitement and unforgettable moments. With legends and current stars competing for glory, the event is set to captivate audiences around the world.
